Throughout his 86 years of life, William James Poindexter has been described in many ways. Some have used his many interests and multi-talents to say he is "a natural gardener, a horseman, and a master carpenter with a deep interest and enthusiasm for Stock and Nascar racing." However, everyone who has ever known him declare that he is, always was, and forever will be remembered as "a kind man always with a smile on his face who loves his family and was a die-hard fan of the Washington Redskins (Commanders), even when they were losing."
One of the three sons of Charles Poindexter Sr. and Susie Kinney Poindexter, "Deck" or "Bum," as he was affectionately called by many friends and relatives, was born on August 7, 1938, in Louisa County, Va. during an illness and while a patient at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital in
Charlottesville, Virginia, William peacefully went to join the Lord, his relatives and friends in heaven on November 26, 2024.
William was educated in the Louisa County Public Schools. He began school attending Louisa Training School, the only school for blacks in the County. In the County efforts to provide "separate but equal facilities for African Americans," it was replaced in 1953 by a new Archie G. Richardson High School, from which he graduated in 1956.
At the age of 8 years old, he was baptized at his family's church, Springfield Baptist, in Gordonsville,Va, where he was still an active member until his death. On October 4, 1958, he married the love of his life, Ida Carr. From this union, the couple's only child, a daughter, was born. They named her Valentina, and she became the other love of his life.
William found his calling as a youth in natural gardening and thus began his farming career in his family's business way of life. In his early 20's, he and his older brother became interested in horses, so he became a horseman on Talley Ho Farm in Keswick, Va. Later he decided to pursue a career as a carpenter. With the help of his brother-in-law, he got a job with a contractor as a professional carpenter. In 1974, he was hired by Dr. Charles Hurt of Virginia Land Company where he worked 40 years as a master carpenter before retiring in 2014. In addition, he worked for Dr. Charlie Hurt for over 55 years. William was a member of Prince Hall Masons of Orange, VA.
During those years as a carpenter with Va. Land Company, William Poindexter became known as a man that could build almost anything. He was noted as a master carpenter who could think quickly on his feet as he worked. He was instrumental in building many, if not most, of the buildings on Pantops Mountain, Hollymead, Crozet, and on Barracks and Polo Grounds Roads. Anyone traveling in these areas and looking at the buildings see the work of William Poindexter.
William was predeceased by his parents, brother and sister-in law: Charlie and Ann Poindexter; mother and father-in- law: Eugene Carr Sr. and Virginia; four brothers-in-law: Donnell Bates, Harry Byrd, John and Charles Carr and two sisters-in-law: Virginia Gatewood and Eloise Bates and favorite aunt, Carrie Taylor. He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Ida Carr Poindexter; his daughter, Valentina Poindexter Harris; brother and sister-in law: Ronnie Poindexter (Mary Pleasants); Charlie Poindexter (Julie), Sharon Arnette (Leroy), Jackie Poindexter, Roland Poindexter (Patricia), Michael Poindexter, Amanda Poindexter; In laws; Blanche Gatewood, Gloria Byrd, Cleo Carr and Dale Carr (Jane); many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and a host of friends and acquaintances.
