William Putnam Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Smoky Mountain Cremations and Funeral Service on Mar. 2, 2026.
William Herbert Putnam, age 83, went to his heavenly home on January 26, 2026. Born on April 15, 1942, in the mountains of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Don and Alice Putnam.

William carried with him throughout his life the strong values, work ethic, and deep love of family that are rooted in the mountains he called home.

William retired from Champion International Paper Mill after 37 dedicated years of service. He was a hardworking and dependable man who took great pride in providing for his family. Even in retirement, he rarely slowed down. One of his greatest passions was yard work - he loved mowing the grass, working with his tractor, and tending to his land. He enjoyed hunting, farming, and going to the lake. William also dearly loved his horses and spent many peaceful hours caring for them and riding, finding joy and comfort in their companionship.

A devoted fan of Pisgah High School football, William never missed a game. Supporting the team brought him great joy, and Friday nights in the stands were among his favorite traditions.

Above all else, William loved his family. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of his life, and he treasured every moment spent with them. His steady presence, quiet strength, and unwavering love will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 65 years, Barbara Black Putnam; his children, Dean Putnam and wife Rita, and Sonia Jones; his brother, Jack Putnam; five grandchildren, Mandy, Krista, Tavo, Hollie, and Jeremiah; four great-grandchildren, Bear, Mesha, Soren, and Marlene; one sister-in-law Jori Popp along with several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many dear friends.

In honoring William's wishes, no services are planned.

His legacy of love, hard work, devotion to family, and love for the simple blessings of country life will live on in all who knew him
