Dateline: Glenville William "Bill" J. Schmitt passed away peacefully on October 7, 2025, at Kingsway Arms in Schenectady, at the age of 86. Born on February 12, 1939, in Chicago, IL, to the late Michael and Mary (Westerkamp) Schmitt.
Bill's journey began in Chicago, where he was raised alongside his siblings Robert (Helen), John (Nancy), Mary Kay Peters (Reg), and the late Michael Schmitt (survived by Karyn). Bill earned his undergraduate and law degree from Loyola University Chicago. Following law school, he served as a Judge Advocate in the Air Force.
In 1969, Bill married the love of his life, Margaret (Kawa) Schmitt, and together they built a beautiful life until her passing in 2006. Their union was blessed with four children: Constance "Connie" Miller (Scott), Paul Schmitt (Kim), Mark Schmitt, and Frank Schmitt (Michelle). Bill's role as a father was one he cherished deeply.
Bill's professional life was as distinguished as his personal life. He dedicated many years to General Electric as a long-time tax lawyer, where his expertise and counsel were highly valued. His commitment to his work was matched only by his dedication to his family.
A man of varied hobbies and interests, his early years in Chicago instilled in him a lifelong love for the city's sports teams, especially the Cubs and the Bears, a passion he would carry throughout his life. Bill found joy at the Saratoga Race Track, where the thrill of horse racing captured his heart. He was also an avid poker player. Reading was another of William's pleasures, providing him with quiet moments of reflection and continual learning.
Above all, Bill's greatest joy was his family, especially his grandchildren: Caitlyn and Paige Miller, Emily and Tyler Schmitt, Parker, Lydia, Catie, Rose and Martin Schmitt. He took immense pride in their accomplishments and was a constant source of love and encouragement.
Funeral services for Bill will be held on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at 11 am at the Glenville Funeral Home, 9 Glenridge Road, Glenville. Interment will follow at St. Anthony's Cemetery, Glenville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Bill's name may be made to Michael J. Fox Foundation (https://www.michaeljfox.org/) or to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (www.nationalbreastcancer.org/).
