William Vance Schroeder (Bill), resident of Saratoga, WY, passed away on October 9, 2025 at the North Platte Valley Medical Center after a long battle with cancer. He was 84 years old. He was born on August 8, 1941 in Decatur, IL to Wilmer and Margie Irene White Schroeder. Bill was the second of four children; that included one older sister and two younger sisters. He was educated in a country school and then later graduated from MacArthur High School in 1959. Bill was also in the reserve Marine Corp during high school.
Bill enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in 1959. He attended Embassy School in Washington. He was then later stationed as a guard at Benghazi, Libya in 1961, Nicosia, Cyprus in 1962, New Delhi, India in 1963-1964. Bill re-enlisted after being home for a year. He then took basic Vietnamese terminology in 1966, scout sniper school, demolition school, and NCO training in 1967. He served two combat tours in Vietnam. Bill also received a Good Conduct Medal in 1967. After serving in the Marine Corp, Bill attended Western Illinois University where he graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor's Degree in History. After college, he moved to Laramie, WY where he worked at a saw mill. He later became a night auditor at a Holiday Inn. Bill moved to Saratoga, WY in 1977 where he worked as a night auditor at the Saratoga Inn. This is where he met the love of his life, Marilyn Bartlett, and they were married in 1979. Bill and Marilyn welcomed their son, Jared, in 1980. In 1980, Bill was hired as the Saratoga Town Treasurer where he worked for 26 1/2 years. After retiring from that position, he then worked for Carbon County School District as a night custodian for eight years.
Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, hiking and the companionship of his dogs. He was an avid reader and enjoyed watching movies about war and combat. He was a Civil War history buff because of his two grandfathers who fought in the Civil War.
Bill is survived by his wife of 46 years, Marilyn Schroeder; his son Jared (Kelsie) Schroeder of ID, a grandson, Kutter, and step-granddaughter, Kendall Matsler; sisters Sally Yetter, Karen Gross and Cheryl Kaufman and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilmer and Margie Schroeder, brother-in-laws Ron Yetter, Allan Gross and Louie Kaufman and a nephew, Ronnie Yetter.
A memorial service and military funeral honors will take place on Saturday, October 18, 2025 at 11:00 Am at the Saratoga Cemetery Chapel.
