William "Bill" Schulhofer

William "Bill" Dedrick Schulhofer was born on May 25, 1938 and departed to be with his Lord on November 19, 2021.

Bill was born in Waynesville, NC, and was a lifelong resident of Haywood County.  He was the son of Mary Elizabeth "Betsy" (Milner) Schulhofer and Emmanuel Jacob "Jake" Schulhofer of Waynesville.

Bill is survived by sons William "Bill" Alan Schulhofer and Daniel Scott "Scotty" Schulhofer (Stacey Mull Schuholfer); grandchildren Morgan Schulhofer Plemmons (Hunter Plemmons), Sydney Schulhofer, Sam Schulhofer, Slade Schulhofer, and Scout Schulhofer; great-grandchildren Bradley Plemmons and William Plemmons.  In addition, Lee Hardin served as Bill’s caregiver and great friend over the last two years.

The Red Thread of Bill’s life started humbly and has interwoven its way into the hearts and lives of many people throughout Western North Carolina.  Bill was President of Schulhofer’s Inc., known as Schulhofer’s Junkyard.  He would say that it wasn’t a regular junkyard, but many times it was a place to gather and have fellowship.  Probably, more lives were led to the Lord in that office than in some churches.  Throughout the years, Bill was very involved in his church, Barbersville Baptist Church.  He was Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, RA leader, and served on the Building Committee.

Bill invested early into properties that were mere pasture.  Today, this land is Russ Avenue, one of the busiest stretches of roadway around.  He had great vision and ambition in his business decisions.

Bill was very involved in the community as well, coaching Little League Football and Baseball teams that led to State Championships in 1968.  He was a lifelong member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and was the youngest to achieve the 32nd Degree.  He was also a member of the Lion’s Club, Woodsmen of the World, Jaycees, and Waynesville Businessmen’s Association.  In 1970, he served as president of the Booster’s Club for Waynesville and Hazelwood.

Bill loved nothing more than playing practical jokes on his friends and colleagues.  He walked as an honest man in his dealings, but admitted there were a few times he went astray, such as when using a few breadcrumbs to catch a fish, or when keeping a trout that was a little undersized.  Bill always claimed happiness and was known to play Christmas music all year.  When asked what he was most proud of in his life, he replied: "having two sons that are my best friends."  He spoke dearly of his family and cherished family time and the Holidays.  Some could say that he was the Most Interesting Man; he will remain in the stories passed down for generations to come.  Here ends the making of his Red Thread, but it will weave its way through his family and friends for years to come.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Jeff Moore officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. until service time.
