William "Bill" J. Shackelford, a cherished son of Texas, was called to his eternal rest on December 5, 2024, in Odessa, Texas. Born on June 18, 1940, in the small town of Marathon, Texas, he grew up with a heart as expansive as the landscapes that surrounded him.
A devoted husband, Bill found endless joy and partnership in his life with Isabel Shackelford, whom he affectionately referred to as "old woman." Their bond was a testament to love's ability to flourish in simplicity, marked by shared laughter and deep affection for one another. His life was one richly woven with the threads of genuine companionship and heartfelt moments.
Bill's journey was characterized by steadfast commitment, exemplified through his years of dedicated service to the State of Texas until his retirement. Prior to this, he honored his country with pride as a member of the United States Army, embodying the spirit of duty and sacrifice.
A proud graduate of Marathon High School, Bill carried the versatile lessons of his education into the vibrant tapestry of his life. He was an unwavering enthusiast of the great outdoors, indulging in hunting and fishing, pursuits that allowed him to connect with nature and reflect on life's simple pleasures. His love for animals was profound, showcasing his compassionate spirit that endeared him to many. He spent countless days in the embrace of the wilderness, forging a profound appreciation for the beauty that surrounded him.
Bill's legacy is enriched by his siblings, who have predeceased him: his father, William Shackelford, and mother, Marjorie Shackelford, instilled in him a strong sense of family values that he cherished throughout his life, along with his brother, Bunky Rutledge, and brother, Lee Roy Rutledge, who watched over him from beyond this world.
In days to come, the memories of Bill will resonate in the lives of his surviving family, including his loving wife Isabel, his nephews Jon Rutledge of Midland and Roy Rutledge of Monahans, and his nieces Karen Austin of Lubbock and Patsy Rutledge of Midland. Surviving step-children are Macky McGuire of Sunrise Beach Village, Texas, Eric McGuire of Laredo, Texas, Joel McGuire of Burnett, Texas, and Roxie McGuire of Marathon, Texas. They will carry forward the warmth of his spirit and the joy he brought into their lives.
Bill Shackelford’s days on this earth were a testament to love, duty, and a splendid appreciation for nature, enveloping all who knew him in kindness and camaraderie. His life will be celebrated, and his memories cherished as a guiding light for those he leaves behind.
