William Elburne Simmons, 87, passed away on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah House in Fishersville.

He was born on July 3, 1938, in Staunton to the late Harry Richard, Sr. and Charlene Nannie Campbell Simmons.

Elburne was a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton.

He went on to build a career as a mechanics manager, retiring at McDonough Toyota in Staunton. He took great pride in his work and the team he helped lead.

Above all else, Elburne was a devoted family man. His family was the center of his world, his greatest joy and most important purpose in life. He was deeply involved in the lives of his grandchildren, rarely missing a game, performance, or event, he was always present.

Elburne had a generous heart. He never turned away anyone in need and was always willing to lend a hand.

He is survived by his daughters, Deborah Jean Simmons Lee (Herbert Hawkins) and Frances Ann Simmons Wheeler and her husband, Randy; his brother, Harry Richard Simmons, Jr.; his grandchildren, Jessica Heather and Myesha Renee Lee, Derek James Wheeler (Michelle), Corey Wayne Wheeler (Bri), and Brice Elburne Wheeler (Kari); his granddaughter-in-law, Crystal Simmons his great-grandchildren, Brody, Jax, Chloe, Colton, Aleeyah, Harlee, and Gracie; the mother of his children and good friend, Sarah Aleman; and numerous nephews and cousins.

He also had a special place in his heart for Sarah’s dogs, Phoebe and Chi-Chi. Elburne loved taking them for rides and spending time playing with them, treating them as part of the family.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Ronald Wayne Simmons, and his grandson, Anthony Bruce Simmons.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at Oak Lawn Mausoleum and Memory Gardens in Staunton.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Augusta Health Hospice of the Shenandoah for the compassionate care and support shown to Elburne during his time there.
