COHOES William J. Smith, 56, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, June 15, 2024 at his residence.
Born in Saratoga, Bill was the son of Phyllis DeMarco Smith of Cohoes and the late Frank E. Smith. He was educated in Cohoes schools and graduated from Cohoes High School in 1985.
A proud Cohoes resident, Bill was always very active in his community. He was past 1st Ward Councilman in Cohoes, a past member of the Cohoes School Board, past president and lifetime member of the PAA in Cohoes and a longtime member of the Marconi Social Club.
Bill was known for his love of sports, especially softball. He was the current NYS District 7 Softball J/O Commissioner and a 30-year member of the Capital Dist. Softball Umpires Assoc. He also was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan and an Alabama Crimson Tide fan. He enjoyed spending time in his hot tub and garden as well as taking vacations to Cape Cod every year.
In addition to his mother, Bill is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Melissa McKay Smith; by his beloved son, Nicholas Smith (Danielle) of Cohoes; by his siblings, Wendy Smith (Donna) of Clinton, MA, Robin Francesconi (Ed) of Cohoes, Frank Smith, Jr. (Kim) of Scotia and Ann Simonian of Waterford; by his uncles, John DeMarco of Latham and Ronald Smith of Sarasota, FL; by his aunt, Starr D'Ambro of Mechanicville; and by his mother-in-law, Nancy McKay (the late Richard) of Cohoes. He is also survived by his beloved pets, Molly, Pearl and Peppa as well as numerous nieces and nephews and many close and dear friends.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 20th at 7 p.m. in the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 105 Vliet Blvd., Cohoes. Relatives and friends may visit at the funeral home from 4-7 p.m. prior to the service.
