William Sonneborn Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by James M. Campbell Funeral Home, Inc. - Philadelphia on Dec. 19, 2024.
William N. Sonneborn, Jr., born on January 29, 1932, passed away on December 16, 2024, at the age of 92. A lifelong resident of Philadelphia, Bill was a man whose life was defined by dedication, humor, and a deep love for his family and community.
A proud graduate of Northeast High School in 1950, Bill went on to serve his country as a veteran of the US Air Force. His career was a testament to hard work and ingenuity. Starting in maintenance at Exide Batteries, he quickly rose through the ranks to become General Foreman of the plant. Recognized for his talents and innovative spirit, Bill was recruited as an engineer in Exide's research division in Yardley, PA, where he developed batteries for early model electric vehicles and consulted at factories in China and Venezuela, training workers in both countries.
Bill's professional journey continued at the Philadelphia Gas Works and later as a security guard at 6-ABC News. Even in retirement, his industrious nature thrived as he took on various part-time roles, notably becoming a customer favorite at Vince's Pizza.
Beyond his career, Bill's commitment to his community was unwavering. He served as a Democratic Committeeman and held leadership roles as President of the Lawncrest-Burholme Community Association and the Lawncrest Athletic Association. He also served as President of the St. Basil Academy Parent Teacher Association. Bill's quick smile, generosity, and warm welcome touched the lives of many. His passion for Philadelphia sports, especially the Phillies, was well-known, and he always had a joke ready, never meeting a stranger. His Donald Duck impression brought joy to children, particularly those at St. Cecilia's School, where his wife Lorraine taught.
Bill was predeceased by his wife, Joan (nee Gaynor), granddaughter Grace Sonneborn, and brother Martin"Buddy" Sonneborn. He leaves behind a loving family, including his devoted wife Lorraine Sonneborn (nee O'Brien), his children Lisa Sonneborn and Scott Sonneborn (Holly), and grandchildren Lucy Pickering, Madison Sonneborn, Will Pickering, and Emma Sonneborn. He is also survived by his brother Steven Sonneborn (Lois) and cherished chosen family, Bob and Doris Marshall.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing, Monday, December 23, 2024, from 9:45 AM to 11:15 AM in Saint Christopher's Church, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30 AM. Interment and Military Honors will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

So sorry to learn of Mr Bills passing. Our family Loved to go to Vince´s on Friday nights just to see Mr Bill. We will never look at a tootsie pop again without thoughts of Mr Bill. He was so sweet to my parents when we would have them with us. Always asking how they were if not with us. When he was the 1st person in line at both of their funerals it was so special to me. He loved to talk Donald Duck to boys and would share our Disney stories. He will be missed. What a great man. RIP Mr Bills fly high with the angels

I have known Mr. Sonneborn since I was in grade school. He is one of the kindest, intellegent and great conversationalist I have ever met. I always knew going over to see Scott when I was a kid, I would hav a good talk with Mr. Sonneborn. Truly a good guy. I will miss him dearly. My heart goes out to the whole family.
