William Edward "Eddie" Sweeney Jr., a devoted family man and respected community member, passed away peacefully on December 6, 2025, in
Jacksonville, North Carolina, at the age of 87. Born on November 27, 1938, in
Newport News, Virginia, Eddie moved to North Carolina in the 1960s, where he would spend the remainder of his life dedicated to service and community.
A memorial service officiated by Rev. Damon Williamson and Rev. William Gay will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church. The family will receive friends following the service.
Eddie's professional journey was marked by a steadfast commitment to public service. He served as the director of the Eastern Governor's Office in New Bern during Governor James Martin's administration. His career with the Department of Transportation (DOT) spanned several decades, where he worked as an insurance compliance officer and held various positions until his retirement at the age of 77. Eddie also contributed his expertise to Vocational Rehabilitation, demonstrating his dedication to helping others.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Eddie was deeply involved in his community. He volunteered with Meals on Wheels for Onslow County, served as a poll judge, and assisted senior citizens with their taxes. His commitment to service was recognized when he was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Governor James Martin. Eddie also served on the City of Jacksonville Mayor's Committee for the Handicap, further exemplifying his dedication to improving the lives of those around him.
A man of faith, Eddie was an active member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, where he worked with the Youth Department and was a member of the Brotherhood. His church community was an integral part of his life, providing him with opportunities to serve and connect with others.
Eddie is preceded in death by his beloved parents, William Sweeney Sr. and Christine Rowe Sweeney. He is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Carolyn Crews Sweeney, of the home; his sons, Barry Sweeney of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, and Philip Sweeney of La Mesa, California; his daughter, Karen Sweeney Albero, and her husband John of Richlands, NC; his cherished grandchildren, Melissa, Adam, Megan, and Katie; and three great-grandchildren. Eddie will also be fondly remembered by his best friends, Charlie Jones and Wayne Mosley.
Eddie's legacy of service, dedication, and love will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His life was a testament to the power of community and the impact one person can have through a lifetime of service.
