William Terney Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home on Jun. 15, 2025.
William Baldwin Terney (November 18, 1938- June 10, 2025)
Bill Terney, 86, of East Granby, Connecticut passed away on June 10. Bill was born in Jamaica, NY and spent a happy childhood in Mineola. He grew up listening to Dodgers games on the radio, playing stickball in his neighborhood streets, and jumping fences to get home faster at lunchtime so he would have more time to read the Saturday Evening Post.
Bill graduated from Mineola High School in 1956 as Class Valedictorian (not to mention Prom King). He went on to a degree in Naval Architecture from The Webb Institute of Technology in Glen Cove. He then attended MIT, earning a Masters and Doctorate in Nuclear Engineering in 1968.
Bill also studied the German language for many years, and after completing his formal education he jumped at the opportunity to work in Germany. He spent three happy years living and working in Karlsruhe, traveling extensively throughout Europe and making lifelong friends from different countries.
After returning to the US he settled in Connecticut to work as a Nuclear Engineer at Combustion Engineering, where he met his future wife, Andrea. After marrying in 1975 they settled in Granby, CT where they would remain for the next 36 years, raising their family. Bill served Granby on both the Planning and Zoning Board and the Granby Community Fund, along with coaching and leading many of his kids' activities.
Bill treasured maintaining a healthy work/life balance, and he made sure to fill every free moment of his weekends and vacations. He launched sailboats in Mystic. He skied whenever possible, which escalated to moving to Vermont for entire winters once he was retired. He loved to kayak, hike, and bike which inspired him and Andrea to move to the Cape for 8 happy and sunny years during their retirement.
He also traveled as far abroad as New Zealand, Russia and the Caribbean, and he moved to France for a spell to attend language school. He explored history, culture, art and language all the way into his 80s. His enthusiasm for education, adventure, travel and an active lifestyle were contagious and will continue to live on in all of his family.
Bill is predeceased by his parents, Ewald Baldwin and Evelyn Laube, as well as his beloved stepmother Margaret Mabel Terney. Bill is survived by his wife of 50 years, Andrea Nielsen Terney, sister Marion Terney Mattei, his daughters, Elizabeth Terney (Trent Hewitson) and Katherine Breth (Andrew) and their families, including his four grandchildren Sophie (11), Logan (9), Beau (6) and Lily (2), who will miss him very much.
A Funeral Service for Bill Terney will be held on Friday, June 20, 2025, at Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook Street, Granby, CT 06035. Visitation will take place from 10:30-11:30AM at Carmon's. Burial will follow at Granby Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bill's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Executive Blvd Suite #4b, Southington, CT 06489.

I never met a person that had his "stuff" together like Bill.

So sorry to hear that Bill passed away. He always seemed so much younger than his biologic age. I will miss him. We used to talk about Mineola as I went to Chaminade High School. His love for his family was evident when he spoke of his kids and grandkids.
