William Turpie Jr., of Anacortes, WA (Lat.: 48.512604, Long.: -122.612671) passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side on Thursday, April 7th, 2022. "Turp" or "Bill" as he was known by his friends and family was born on April 25th, 1941 in La Mesa, CA just east of San Diego making him a 4th generation Californian. He graduated from Helix High School in La Mesa, CA in 1959 after which he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Marketing/Marketing Research from San Diego State College in 1963. He enlisted in the Air Force and proudly served our country from 1963 to 1969.
Anyone who knew Turp was touched by his kindness, humor, drive to always do better, to live life to the fullest extent possible, and to get across the finish-line. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William Turpie Sr. and Mary Lee (Currier) Turpie and his brother Stephen C. Turpie (Randy). He is the father of Brad Lee Turpie (Amy), and daughter Sarah Lauren Turpie. Grandfather to Lauren and Kyle Turpie. Bill was the long-time partner of Beverly J. Hegg. He was the surrogate stepfather to Gary, Robert, and Gina Glasser, and was known as "Captain Bill" to Kylie, Cale, Cameron, Madeleine, Harper, Ryan and Justin. He leaves behind many extended family members, business, social, sailing, 4 wheeling and flying friends all over the Country.
Bill applied his visionary marketing research talents towards real estate development, where he improved multiple communities throughout California, Nevada and Hawaii; always pursuing a "win/win" for the cities, communities, developers, as well as all of his business associates.
Turp had many pursuits and passions in his life, including a life-long love of sailing where he raced in many local races on the West and East Coasts, as well as long distance Trans-Atlantic and Trans-Pacific races. He was a long-standing member of the Newport Harbor Yacht Club and St. Francis Yacht Club. while also earning his US Coast Guard Captains License for 100 Ton Near Coastal vessels- including multiple endorsements.
Turp was proud to be the Captain of the Tugboat Princess for 6 years in the Pacific Northwest, which he enjoyed with his longtime partner and first mate, Beverly. In addition to boating, Bill loved flying. He earned his General Aviation Pilot's license in 1978, was a member of the Experimental Aviation Association for over 50 years and served on the board of the California Pilots Association.
He was an avid snow and water skier and a fan of all sports. He spent a lot of time running around the Nevada Desert in his Defender D90. Earlier years found him in his beloved Porsche 911T. In addition to his hobbies, he was a mentor and patient advocate to other Multiple Myeloma patients, and a Honored Hero for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Bill fought Multiple Myeloma for over 17 years. He was a mentor to many, inspiring them to be the best version of themselves. His boating friends would say that he is one who left a calm wake in his path.
