Services for William Mike Word, 81, of Homer and Monroe, LA, will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, April 26, 2024, at Rowland Road Baptist Church 336 Rowland Road, Monroe, LA, with John Yates and Norman Bryant officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30 P.M. until the time of service on Friday. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery in Monroe, LA.
Mr. Mike Word was born on October 15, 1942, in Little Rock, Arkansas, and passed away on April 24, 2024, in Monroe at St. Francis Hospital.
Mike retired as a captain from the Monroe City Fire Department. He was also a roofer and sought-after carpenter well into his late seventies. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. Mike was gentle, kind, and generous, embodying his faith in Jesus in everything he did. He was the patriarch of his family, a loving husband, a wonderful father, a beloved grandfather, and a true friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Beryl and William Moss Word; his wife, Mary Sue Word; his sisters, Ina Mae Pollitt and Billye Counts; and his wife, Jackie Word.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sandra Smith-Word; sister, Ruth Ann Gardner; sons, Mark Word (Susan) and Matt Word (Sherri); daughters, Melissa Batson (Jerry) and Maggi Finley (Dustin); Scott Smith (Lisa), Todd Smith (Heather), Hope Pittman (John), and Kavin Colquette (Crystal); sixteen grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Dustin Finley, Jerry Batson, Micah Batson, Kavin Colquette, Ken Thompson, and Willie Word.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mitchell West and Gary Smith.
