Willie Frank "Sug" Carter, a cherished soul known for his warmth and generosity, passed away peacefully of natural causes on May 18, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on February 28, 1938, in the heart of Pike County, Alabama, Sug was the beloved son of George and Jewel Jackson. His life was a testament to the enduring strength of love, family, and faith.
Sug's early years in Alabama laid the foundation for a life rich in community and service. He was a beacon of light in his hometown, where his infectious laughter and kind-hearted spirit were known to all. Sug's commitment to his faith was unwavering, as evidenced by his devoted membership at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. His melodious voice and spirited presence were staples in the New Bethel Baptist Men's Chorus, where he lifted spirits and spread joy through song.
The love story between Sug and his wife, Loretta Carter, was one for the ages. Their partnership spanned forty-four remarkable years, filled with shared dreams and mutual respect. Together, they raised a family that became Sug's pride and joy. He was a guiding force in the lives of his children, Ronnie Dixon of Lafayette, LA, Valarie (Frederick) Richardson, and Oretha (Bobby) Townsend, both of Dothan, Alabama. Sug's legacy continued to flourish through his seven grandchildren, Ronnie Dixon, Tyniqua Dixon of Georgia, Dashawn Carter, Oretha (William) Potter, Ebony White, O'Nia Richardson, and Omarion Townsend, all of whom he adored and inspired with his wisdom and love.
Sug's sister, Vivian Reading of Dothan, Alabama, was not just a sibling but a devoted friend with whom he shared an unbreakable bond. His life was further enriched by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, each of whom held a special place in his heart. Sug's ability to connect with people from all walks of life was one of his most remarkable traits, and his absence will leave a void in the community he so dearly loved.
As we bid farewell to Willie Frank "Sug" Carter, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and joy. His was a journey marked by unwavering faith, enduring love, and a commitment to the betterment of those around him. Sug's memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched, and his influence will continue to be felt for generations to come.
We take comfort in knowing that Sug's spirit has found peace, and we cherish the memories that will forever keep him close. His laughter will echo in the halls of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, his wisdom will resonate in the lives of his grandchildren, and his love will remain a guiding light for his family.
