Mr. Willie James Leeks was born on December 22, 1952, to the late Mr. Dan Leeks and Oretta Thomas-Leeks in Michigan City, Indiana, Willie was a lifelong resident of the Lakeland community he so dearly loved.
Willie's education was rooted in Michigan City Area Schools, where he gained the knowledge and skills that would serve him throughout his life. He took pride in his work as a machine operator at a local factory.
Despite struggling with health challenges from a young age, Willie never allowed his circumstances to diminish his spirit or his capacity for love and service. He was known for his big heart and infectious laughter. His sense of humor and expertise in storytelling could light up any room, and his hands were rarely still, always ready to fix what was broken or to offer help where it was needed.
Willie's interests reflected his character: straightforward, engaging, and full of life. He had a passion for working on cars, a hobby that not only filled his free time but also allowed him to share his mechanical talents with others. Family gatherings were made all the richer by his presence, and he could often be found enjoying his favorite Western TV shows.
Alongside his companion Angela, Willie joined the Spoken Word Faith Center Church under the teaching of Pastor Rosie Grinston. His faith never wavered.
Willie's spirit can be best summarized by these words: kind, funny, and handy. He was a man who could be counted on to bring a smile to your face, to offer a joke when you needed to laugh, or to extend a helping hand when you needed it most. His absence will be felt deeply by those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Mr. Willie James Leeks departed from this world for his heavenly home on Thursday, February 1, 2024, at Franciscan Health of Michigan City at the age of 71. Willie was preceded in death by his siblings, Nathaniel Leeks, Ernestine Leeks-Milton, and Ruthy Leeks-Woodley; one nephew, Eric Milton. Willie's departure is deeply felt by all who knew him, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, and humor.
His memory is cherished by his special lady and companion of 26 years, Angela Hicks, as well as his siblings Robert L. (Beverly) Leeks Sr., Emma Cobb, Doris Leeks, Lorence (Faith) Leeks, John (Mary Alviar) Leeks, Ernie (Violet) Leeks, Brenda (Bob) Zondor, and Carl (Terri) Leeks. Willie also leaves to mourn his memories to his many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral Services will be 6pm-7pm, Thursday, February 15, 2024, at Emmanuel Funeral Home 3025 East Michigan Blvd, Trail Creek, Indiana with Pastor Rosie Grinston to give words of comfort. Viewing will be 5pm-6pm, Thursday, February 15, 2024, at Emmanuel Funeral Home (Trail Creek).
