With profound sadness but deep gratitude for a faithful life well lived, we celebrate the legacy of Mr. Willie Clarence Sherrer, who was born November 16, 1942, in Washington, Georgia, to the late Dea. Clarence Sherrer and the late Sister Lizzie Sherrer. Willie was preceded in death by his beloved brothers Jacob Sherrer, Samuel Ganty, and James D. Sherrer, and his cherished sisters Sarah Champion, Mary L. Sherrer, and Alma J. Tucker.
From an early age, Willie carried a spirit of dedication and perseverance. He pursued his education at Wilkes County Training School (now Washington Central High) before furthering his studies for a year at Morris Brown College. His commitment to service then led him to enlist in the United States Army, where he bravely served during the Vietnam War, earning numerous commendations for his dedication. His devotion to his country continued through his proud tenure in the United States National Guard, where he remained steadfast in his duty until his retirement-all while maintaining a full-time career with the United States Postal Service.
Beyond his professional and military endeavors, Willie's greatest source of pride was his family. On June 28, 1975, he married his love, Neona C. Sherrer, and together they built a beautiful life, raising two children, Karen D. Roberts and Frederick C. Sherrer. His love and wisdom shaped their paths, instilling in them the values of integrity, perseverance, and faith. Willie's faith was an essential part of his journey. He was a devoted member of New Salem Baptist Church and found fellowship in Zion Hill Baptist Church. His unwavering belief in God, humble wisdom and his silent strength guided his steps and strengthened his heart, leaving an indelible impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Although he has left this world, his spirit lives on in those he loved. He leaves behind his sisters-in-law: Opal Sherrer, Brigiette Sherrer, Dollie Walker, and Laura McCord, and his brothers-in-law: Rev. Aaron Wheat and Dea. Oscar Wyatt; and two goddaughters and a host of and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Most precious to him were his grandchildren, Justin Frederick Sherrer (17) and Austin Frederick Sherrer (11). Willie was more than a husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend-and though he has departed from our sight, he remains forever in our hearts.
