Willie James Singleton's funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 31, at 11 a.m. at the Strand Theater, 619 Louisiana Avenue.
According to a brief biography on the R.W. Norton Art Gallery website, Singleton was a civil rights attorney who specialized in class action cases involving toxic substances and famously won a half-billion-dollar settlement against a major tobacco company.
Singleton served on the Caddo Parish police jury, was the first Black man to seek the office of the Mayor of Shreveport, and served as a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives for 12 years, where he chaired the judiciary committee making way for the number of Black judges in Louisiana to go from six to 80.
Singleton will lie in honor on Friday, August 30, from noon until 6 p.m. at the Strand Theater. Flowers and condolences may be sent to Good Samaritan Funeral Home.
