Willie Ray Whaley, affectionately known as "Willie," passed away peacefully on October 6, 2025, in
Richlands, North Carolina, at the age of 76. Born on June 24, 1949, in Jacksonville, North Carolina, Willie was a cherished member of the community whose warmth and friendliness left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Willie dedicated much of his life to hard work and service, spending 13 years as the second longest Salvation Army Bell Ringer, spreading holiday cheer and goodwill. He also worked tirelessly as a farmer, embodying the spirit of dedication and perseverance.
A man of varied interests, Willie was a fervent sports enthusiast, rooting passionately for the UNC Tar Heel basketball team and the New York Yankees. His love for community and sports extended to his unwavering support for local athletics, as he proudly attended every home game of the Richlands High School football team.
In his leisure, Willie found joy in watching westerns, possessing a remarkable knack for recalling every actor in each show. He was often seen at the local Hardee's and Piggly Wiggly, where he delighted in mingling with friends and locals, sharing stories and laughter.
Willie was preceded in death by his parents, Carson Whaley Sr. and Glennie Hill Whaley; his brother, Carson Leo Whaley, Jr.; and his sister, Elizabeth VanWinkle. He is survived by his brothers, Rodney Adrian Whaley of Jacksonville, Mike Whaley of Richlands, and Forrest Whaley of Richlands; his sisters, Linda Whaley Briese of Richlands, Becky Futrell of Richlands, and Patricia Jean Bizet of Maryland; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will host a Celebration of Life on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home of Richlands. Friends are invited to pay their respects and share memories with the family from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., one hour prior to the service.
Willie's legacy of kindness, humor, and community spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
