Wilma L. Heathcock, age 72, of Goshen, Indiana, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2025, surrounded by family and love. She was born on January 28, 1953, in Iaeger, West Virginia, a small mountain town that remained close to her heart throughout her life.
Wilma was a woman defined by deep devotion: to her family, her friends, her values, and her faith. She lived her life as a testament to generosity, warmth, and quiet strength. Her laughter, wisdom, and unwavering presence were a source of light to everyone who knew her.
She met the love of her life, John R. Heathcock, on a blind date arranged by her cousin Barbara. From the very beginning, their connection was undeniable. They were married on July 2, 1973, in a breathtaking ceremony on a mountaintop in West Virginia, after Wilma famously walked across the New River Gorge Bridge to meet John at the altar. It was the beginning of a beautiful love story that spanned decades and weathered every season of life together until John's passing.
Wilma was a proud graduate of Iaeger High School, a milestone that marked the beginning of a remarkable journey as a driven and motivated businesswoman. But more than any career accomplishment, her proudest titles were Mom and Grandma. She poured herself into motherhood with the same care and commitment that defined all she did. Her children: Erika Heathcock, Richard Heathcock, and Christopher Kidd (Stephanie) remember her not just as a mother, but as a comforting presence who never failed to be there when they needed her. Whether it was offering advice, a shoulder to lean on, or a warm meal from her kitchen, Wilma gave her heart without hesitation.
Her grandchildren, especially her beloved grandson Hank Abbott, were the joy of her life. The sun truly rose and set on Hank in Wilma's eyes. She spoke of him with pride and adored every moment they shared. Her other grandchildren, Deanna Kidd and Dexter Kidd also held a special place in her heart, each relationship built on love, laughter, and an abundance of homemade food and hugs.
Family was everything to Wilma. She stayed connected with relatives near and far, often keeping track of who was doing what and who was still with us. She had a knack for staying in touch, often through Facebook where she brought her humor, kindness, and caring spirit into the lives of all who followed her updates. Whether checking in on family or sharing her latest thoughts, Wilma never let distance diminish her connections.
Wilma's kitchen was the heart of her home, a place where countless memories were made. Her children and grandchildren recall the delicious smells, the comforting clatter of pots and pans, and most of all, the way she made everyone feel welcome. That warmth extended far beyond her home. She was a selfless caretaker by nature, always giving, always serving, and never asking for anything in return. She had a way of seeing what others needed and simply stepping in to help, without fanfare.
Though she didn't drink and never sought the spotlight, Wilma had a fun-loving side, especially when it came to music. She had a particular fondness for George Strait songs, and you could often find her humming along with a smile on her face.
Wilma leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and compassion. She taught us the value of showing up, of giving without expecting, and of loving without condition. Her presence made the world a better place, and while we grieve her loss, we also celebrate the incredible life she lived.
We love you, Wilma: Mom, Grandma, Sister, Aunt, Friend. Thank you for all you did for us. Your impact will live on in each life you touched.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents Crocket Rowe & Elva Rowe (Pruitt), her beloved husband John R. Heathcock, and her siblings Wilda Christian, Donna Hicks, and Jay Rowe. Their memories were kept alive in the stories she shared, and now, they welcome her with open arms.
She is survived by her devoted children, Erika Heathcock, Richard Heathcock, and Christopher (Stephanie) Kidd; her cherished grandchildren Hank Abbott, Deanna (Gillum) Kidd, and Dexter Kidd; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, including her Favorite Nephew-Michael Christian, extended family members, and friends who will miss her deeply.
