Wing Quong Lee, "Mr. Lee," of Wilmington, Delaware, passed away on Tuesday, October 4th, at the age of 84, surrounded by family. Wing Quong was born on January 9, 1938, in Taishan, Guangdong, China. He immigrated to the United States in 1948, settling in Wilmington, Delaware. He graduated from Salesianum High School. Wing Quong proudly became a US citizen on September 3, 1958.
Wing Quong married Wah Shui, "Susie," in Hong Kong in August 1963. After returning to Delaware, the newlyweds opened their first restaurant on West 7th Street in Wilmington, where Wing Quong began his lifelong work in the restaurant business. The couple combined their first names and called their establishment Wing Wah Restaurant.
In 1972, they opened a second Wing Wah in Newark, and in 1975, a third location on Concord Pike, Wilmington. Wing Quong, a classically trained chef, could prepare anything from delicate homemade Chinese dumplings to his signature lemon meringue pie. Over the years, he served generations of family diners. He loved interacting with his staff and customers, with whom he formed many lifelong friendships. After operating Wing Wah Restaurant for more than 40 years, Wing Quong and his wife retired in 2004.
Wing Quong was an avid traveler. He especially enjoyed cruising with his wife to Alaska, the Panama Canal, and Europe. In particular, he loved to visit new parts of the US and explore his homeland, China.
While naturally quiet in demeanor, Wing Quong enjoyed a party and was always seen with an engaging smile. He loved children, making sure to customize their meals or surprise them with an intriguing toy. His unwavering love and devotion to his family were always evident. All held him in the highest regard and loved him dearly.
Wing Quong is survived by Wah Shui Lee, his wife of 59 years, his brother Wing Sing Lee, sister Mee Lum Lee, brother Wing Dare Lee, brother Wing Dean Lee, his brother-in-law, Bon Lip Fong and wife Martha, nephew Andrew Y. Y. Fong and wife Sylvia, great-nephew Aaron, nephew Bryon G. Y. Fong and wife Margaret, and extended family. Wing Quong was pre-deceased by his brother, Wing Sun Lee.
At the family's request, services will be private.

My heart goes out 2 Mrs Lee & family 4 such a great loss. I was just reminiscing w/ my mom how when I worked @ Wing Wah & Mr Lee would cook a special dish 4 dinner every night. He was an inspiration, in business, humble ,& true definition of a family man. They don't make men like him anymore. I would laugh when liquor distributors would come in & Mr Lee would tell them " oh owner not here" Wing Wah wasn't just a place 2 work it was about family. I pray Mrs Lee is doing well. I'm living in Florida near my parents & doing my duty taking care of my mom.

I was fortunate to have worked for Mr. Lee and Suzy. I have so many wonderful Wing Wah memories and remember his sense of humor and patience.

Mrs Lee & family I am so sorry 4 your loss. Mr Lee was the best boss & a true inspiration in my life. I was just reminiscing with my mother how Mr Lee would get the biggest kick out of me working Sunday night & having 2 seat men asking for my table all over the restaurant. There was a pay phone inside the entrance & every time the phone rang Mr Lee would say " Sandy 1 of u boyfriends calling " I learned so much from him & how funny he was telling the liquor distributor " NO owner no here" then pretend he didn't know English. They don't make men like him anymore. Mrs Lee I pray u r well. What a blessing 2 have had this wonderful life with such a humble, loving man. I know he will b greatly missed. I'm living in Florida & doing my duty in taking care of my mother.
