Winnie Machiela, 96, of Zeeland, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 21, 2024.
Winnie was born August 27, 1927, in Inwood, Iowa, to Gerrit and Jennie Willemsen. She married Gerrit Hannink and they later moved from South Dakota to West Michigan. In 1990, Gerrit preceded her in death. In 1992, she married Delbert Machiela. They were married for thirty years in 2023 when Delbert preceded her in death. Winnie was employed as a waitress for Bosch's Restaurant for 27 years prior to her retirement. She was well known for her home baked breads for Bosch's and for family and friends. Winnie was a kind and outgoing woman, who had had a joyful spirit. She never lost her sense of humor even in difficult circumstances. Winnie's personality was impactful wherever her location, and with whomever she was spending time. She was a member of North Street Christian Reformed Church.
She is survived by sister-in-law Juliana De Young, brother-in-law Elmer Hoffman; many Hannink nieces and nephews, her foster sons: Darby and Shelly Kilber, Allen and Malissa Kilber; step-children: Bob and Sue Machiela, Duane and Susan Machiela, John and Linda Machiela, Andy and Camie Machiela; 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, Del's sibling family: Pauline Dyke, Lorraine Wierenga, Chester and Caroline Machiela, Marilyn Wassink, Roger and Helene Machiela; and many extended family members and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am, Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at North Street Christian Reformed Church, 20 East Main Ave., Zeeland MI 49464. Visiting hours will be 6-8 pm, Tuesday, July 23, at the Yntema Funeral Home, 251 S. State Street, Zeeland. Interment will be in Zeeland Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Zeeland Christian School.
