Wylene Cleavinger, age 91, of
Earth, Texas, our beloved "Gran" departed for heaven on January 26, 2026. Her journey started on May 18, 1934 in Lamb County, Texas, where she was born to Bob and Fay Ussery, a family full of hard work and little girls.
Wylene was a beautiful young lady when she caught the eye of R.A. Cleavinger. The lovebirds were married on July 11, 1952 and remained happily married for 62 years. Ronald and Wylene were blessed with four children. While R.A. worked as a farmer, Wylene became the ultimate homemaker, cooking all meals from scratch , all while raising her four kids, Julie, Bob, John and Dave. It's safe to say, when their children were young, being on the farm were the best days! That is until the grandkids started arriving. Gran loved nothing more than telling anyone who would listen, that she was a great-great grandmother. She loved all of them equally, never showing partiality. She would have given anyone of them the shirt off her back or at least a piece of her milk glass collection. Yes, Wylene loved antiques and had a house full! In her later years, antique shopping became one of her favorite pastimes. Maybe she loved it so much because of the company she kept while looking for "good junk", R.A., her best haggling friend, Sherry and a few reluctant grandkids. Wylene was a long time member of the Earth Church of Christ, where she taught Sunday School, served as an Elder's wife and made many a pie for anyone in need. Ronald and Wylene missed many a Sunday worship service in Earth, but rest assured, whether it be at the cabin on Tres Ritos or at the lake in Breckenridge, "Church" still happened! It didn't matter where you were, if you were with Gran and Papa on Sunday, time was taken for worship before anything else.
Our hearts are sad that Gran isn't here with us today, but we take comfort in knowing she is singing hymns of praise at the feet of our Savior with her beloved R.A. Wylene is preceded in death by her husband, Ronald; her parents, Bob and Fay Ussery; baby twin sisters, Reva and Neva; sisters, June Bills and Pat Boyd and a special nephew, De Stiles.
Wylene is survived by her daughter, Julie Templeton and her husband, David of
Earth, Texas; her three sons, Bob Cleavinger and his wife, Barbara of Lubbock, Texas; John Cleavinger and his wife, Shirley of Amarillo, Texas and Dave Cleavinger and his wife, Lynne of Levelland, Texas; and her thirteen grandchildren, thirty-seven great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. She will also be remembered by host of special nieces and nephews, and an abundance of special memories with her best friend and "partner in crime", Sherry Hayden.
The family suggests memorials be sent to the New Mexico Christian Children's Home, 1356 NM 236, Portales, NM, 88130.
