Wymard B. McQuown, age 80, of Pittsburgh, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 24, 2025. He was the son of the late Eloise Wood and Wymard B. McQuown and the beloved husband of 50 years to his wife, Virginia.
He loved his five girls, being father of Holly Gaydos and Sarah Van Mosel and stepfather of Elizabeth Johnston, Ingrid Johnston, and Emily Geogerian. He was the grandfather of fifteen and great-grandfather of three.
Wymard spent most of his professional life as a manager at Allegheny Ludlum Steel in Brackenridge. The greatest love of his life was Virginia. Together they shared outdoor adventures, many of them on the water. A favorite and frequent destination was kayaking and camping on Georgian Bay with close friends. Whitewater canoeing was another favorite activity that they shared.
Sylvan Canoe Club in Verona was where Wymard and Virginia found many close friends. The Friday lunch bunch and dog walking friends were also important in his life. All of those people benefited from Wymard's kindness and wit, and many of them benefited from his physical strength when they needed help moving heavy objects. He kept up his strength by rowing and working out religiously.
Boykin spaniels found a deep place in Wymard's heart. Jack, followed by Bucky, were the most loyal of companions. Wymard never tired of throwing balls or going to the dog park or indulging a little swim time.
Balancing his adventurous nature, Wymard really was a home body at heart. He read voraciously, sitting by the fire with his dog. He could talk to anybody about anything owing to his ability to retain the knowledge he gained through books.
A celebration of Wymard's life will be held at the Sylvan Canoe Club at a later date. Donations in Wymard's memory can be made to the Boykin Spaniel Rescue at boykinspanielrescue.org
