It is with heavy hearts and profound love that we announce the passing of Yevgeny “Eugene” Finkel, who left this world peacefully on September 11, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was 87 years old.
Born on March 2, 1938, in Kharkiv, Ukraine, Yevgeny lived a life defined by courage, wisdom, and devotion. In his professional and daily life, he combined theoretical and practical skills with an endless curiosity about the natural world, fostering a lifelong fascination with science and engineering. This passion led him to the Kharkov Polytechnic Institute, where he graduated in 1960 and later returned as a distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering.
Throughout his career, he built a rich legacy marked by teaching, research, and innovation, with several patents to his name. Known for his forthrightness and encyclopedic knowledge, Yevgeny was respected not only for his achievements but for his unshakable integrity and intellectual independence. He never accepted ideas simply because they came from authority; instead, he challenged and questioned them, always seeking truth and clarity. This quality made him a mentor of uncommon depth, inspiring colleagues and students alike with both his honesty and his insistence on critical thought.
Beyond his professional achievements, Yevgeny was a man of culture, known for his love of jazz music and literature. His quick wit, profound wisdom, and independent spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Most of all, Yevgeny was a loving and devoted husband to his beloved wife, Tatyana, and a source of strength and guidance for his family. Through his vision and resilience, he courageously opened the doors for his family to come to America and flourish in a better life — a legacy that will forever live on in the generations that follow.
He is survived by his devoted wife Tatyana, his son Peter Finkel and wife Julia Pavlova, and his granddaughter Alexandra Bystock with her husband Josh Bystock. He was the proud great-grandfather of Max (4) and Benjamin (1), who brought him immense joy.
A service to honor and celebrate Yevgeny’s life will be held at King David Memorial Park on September 21, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., followed by the interment
