Yvonne Clairvena Baughan (Mitchell), age 87, of Bear Lake, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home in her sleep on November 7, 2025, just as she had hoped and prayed.
Yvonne was born on August 29, 1938, in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. She was one of ten children of George Mitchell and Yvonne Rita (Barbeau) Mitchell, French immigrants from Canada.
Like many children of the Depression, Yvonne's early years were difficult. After her father's passing from black lung disease, which he contracted while working in a munitions factory during World War II, Yvonne began working at a local variety store while still in high school to help support her family. Despite the hardship, she was a cheerleader, a member of the women's basketball team, and a dedicated bookkeeping student. She graduated from Bourne High School and later attended cosmetology school.
While working at the variety store, Yvonne met and married Dean Baughan. The couple moved to Williamston, Michigan, where they lived on Dean's family farm and raised three children. Yvonne was proud to be a wife and mother, finding joy in tending their large vegetable garden and sewing for her family. Later, the family settled into their own home on Rowley Road. As her children grew older, Yvonne lovingly cared for her nephews, Chris and Troy.
After her divorce in 1990, Yvonne purchased her own home and rebuilt a happy life. She remained close with Dean's family and found fulfillment in her work with the Michigan Press Reading Service, where she researched and clipped newspaper articles. She also became a talented handweaver, creating blankets, rugs, and wall hangings alongside her dear friend and business partner, Sharon Emrick.
Upon retiring, Yvonne moved to Bear Lake, where she took great joy in helping raise her beloved grandchildren. She was known for her kindness, humor, and ability to make lasting friendships, especially with her best friends, Judy Dickerson and Shirley VanLiere. Yvonne's cheerful spirit, "very French" enthusiasm, and unwavering gratitude defined her life. Her famous neck-wrenching hugs will be deeply missed.
Yvonne is survived by her daughters, Terry Babcock, Kim Baughan-Young, and Lisa Gabel; grandchildren, Brandon Babcock and Amanda Babcock; sisters, Joyce, Georgia, and Marie; brother, Edward; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Sarah, Elaine, and Velma; brothers, Fred and Larry; and grandson, Colin.
Per Yvonne's request, a small gathering to celebrate her life will be held at a later date. Cremation has taken place through Oak Grove Funeral Home of Manistee, with burial at Pilgrim Home Cemetery in Arcadia.
Yvonne grew up with little but cared deeply about those in need. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Benzie Area Christian Neighbors (BACN) Food Pantry in Benzonia, Michigan, or to any local food pantry.
