Zoy (Hassapakis) Kyriakis
Zoy (Hassapakis) Kyriakis, 91, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2025. Zoy was born in San Francisco on Dec. 6, 1933 to the late Alcmeon and Venetia Hassapakis. She grew up in the Richmond District of San Francisco with her brother Gus, of loving memory.
The family was very active at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in San Francisco. Zoy attended Lafayette Elementary School and graduated from Washington High School in 1951. She continued her studies and graduated from Modesto Junior College and San Francisco State University.
Following, Zoy worked at Pacific Bell (The Telephone Company), which happened to be located across the street from Market Street Radio where she and a young man, Ted Kyriakis, caught each other's attention. Not long after, they met each other at a Greek dance in the City... and the rest was history.
Ted and Zoy were married at the Annunciation Cathedral in San Francisco on Oct. 20, 1957. They bought their first home in Daly City, Calif., where they made life long friends and started their family. Their daughter Marina was followed by son Tom.
They later decided to move down the Peninsula to San Mateo. Ted and his brother Frank opened San Mateo Electronics on 42nd Ave. and together ran their business for 50 years. Zoy was a constant supporter and inspiration to Ted and the business, while also tending to her family. Zoy was proud of the family business and was especially proud that Tom took over their legacy. Marina was also involved, working both the front counter and behind the scenes for many years. The store was the center of their lives and served customers throughout the Bay Area.
Zoy was a devout member of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Belmont. She, Ted and the family were active in many aspects of the church, including the annual festival, youth groups with their children and Outreach ministries, where Zoy especially enjoyed meal preparation for Samaritan House in San Mateo.
Zoy was a true nature-lover. She enjoyed the Redwoods, growing flowers and plants and tending to her garden. It was her "happy place!"
Zoy was deeply devoted to her family. She loved spending time together and was so very proud of her children and grandchildren. Zoy is preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Ted; by her son Tom, who unexpectedly passed seven months before her; and by her brother, Gus, who passed 10 months ago. By her very deep love, faith and trust in God, she remained strong.
Zoy is survived by her devoted daughter Marina Fitzgerald and her husband Joe, and her loving daughter-in-law Zafiro Kyriakis. Zoy was so very proud and blessed to have had her grandchildren Casey Fitzgerald, and Ted and Vickie Kyriakis always close to her and sharing in their love and many accomplishments. She will also be dearly missed by her sister-in-law Linda Hassapakis, niece Trista Kerley, and nephew Dean Hassapakis, along with their families, as well as many cousins.
We will always remember Zoy's beautiful smile, contagious laugh, her common sense and her love. We know she is now in God's hands and reunited with Ted, Tom and her brother Gus, but will live forever through her daughter, grandchildren and loving family and friends.
