Daphne Cleve Obituary

VANCEBORO | Daphne Donerson Cleve, 92, peacefully passed away at home on Monday, March 13, 2017.
A service to honor and celebrate Daphne's life will be held Friday at 2 PM at the Vanceboro Christian Church, with Pastor Mike Swain officiating. Burial will follow at Celestial Memorial Gardens.
Born August 24, 1924, she was the daughter of Dan and Sophia Donerson. Daphne grew up in Dover, NC, attended East Carolina Teachers College, and taught school in Beaufort and Craven Counties. A faithful member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church for over 60 years, she served and volunteered in several capacities. Her devotion to her community was very evident by her generous support and personal involvement. Her love for education combined with her compassion for the plight of the American Indians also made her a faithful supporter of these causes.
In addition to her parents, Daphne was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Bill Cleve, and two sisters, Joyce Wooten and Peggy Lewis of Kinston.
Survivors include her: son, Danny Quinn and wife Marilyn; granddaughter, Ivey Quinn Barfield; and great grandson, Erik Barfield, Jr., all of Vanceboro.
Also surviving is a sister, Marjorie Kelley of Atlantic Beach, NC and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their sincere thank you to Dr. Robin Adams and the staff of Pitt Family Physicians; her devoted caregivers; and for the love and support shown by many.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 PM at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Vanceboro.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The American Indian College Fund, 8333 Greenwood Blvd., Denver, CO 80221 (www.collegefund.org) or the charity of your choice.

I met Bill and Daphne while searching for my birth father. The two of them and I immediately clicked and I spent many an enjoyable day with them, often spending the night and going to church on Sunday. Daphne and I talked on the phone about every other day for a couple of years before Alzheimers erased me from her memory, a pain I don't think will ever leave me. She was the absolute epitome of a lady and will be tremendously missed by me. I loved her dearly. I remember when I first met her, I asked what I should call her. Instead of replying Daphne or Mrs. Cleve, she replied "Queen". Bill roared with laughter. I found the most beautiful tiara and mailed it to her. A queen should have her own tiara.....and she definitely was a queen among women.

I will miss her so much on my visits to Vanceboro. I am sure that she and my Mom are having a good chat as well as some eggnog. She always loved my Mom's egg nog and never missed coming over for a glass of it.
