Thomas Grimes Obituary

SAVOY - Thomas A. Grimes, 80, of Urbana died Friday evening (July 4, 2025) in Savoy. 

There will be a visitation Monday, July 14, from noon to 1 p.m. at Owens Funeral Home, 101 N. Elm St., Champaign. The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will immediately follow in Grandview Memorial Gardens, Champaign, and military rites will be accorded.

Tom was born on Oct. 10, 1944, in Savanna, a son of Duane and Elsie (Cirksena) Grimes. He married Elaine Osterhoff on Dec. 18, 1976, in Champaign. She survives. 

Other survivors include two brothers, Nathan (Bridget) Gehrts of Texas and Bob Gehrts of Ohio; his sister-in-law, Juanita (Marshall) Couch; along with many loving nieces and nephews.

Tom was proud to have served in the U.S. Army for eight years. He worked at the UI, where he ran the printing press. Tom retired in 2001 after 39 years of work.

He was a devout Catholic and a longtime parishioner at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Urbana.

Tom was always smiling and joking around. He was always there to pat you on the back when times got tough to let you know that things were going to be o.k.. He will be missed.
