VIVIAN BATTERSBY Obituary

Vivian Battersby, 88 years old, of Ormond Beach, Florida, died Sunday, June 19, 2011 at Oceanside Memorial Hospice, Ormond Beach surrounded by her loving family and her special little companion; Callie, a Chihuahua mix. Born in Westchester County, NY on May 18, 1923 to Ernest Scharf and Elsa Erickson Scharf, she graduated from Harrison High School, NY in 1939. Vivian went on to receive her Nursing Degree from Grasslands School of Nursing, Valhalla, NY in 1944. While there, she met and soon married Erich Bosshold, an Intern in Anesthesiology at Columbia Medical University on February 19, 1944. Together they traveled in the United States and abroad with the Army Medical Corps and raised four children. Upon their return to the States, they lived briefly in San Antonio, Texas and then moved to New York State, where they lived in various places in Long Island and Westchester County, finally settling in Brewster, Putnam County, NY. During those years Vivian was not only a mom and homemaker but also nurtured her talents as an artist, and an accomplished and prolific seamstress whose work was sought after for its creativity and craftsmanship. She was a musician, she loved to play the organ. She was exceedingly handy and inventive, helping to renovate each home the family lived in. There was no project or task she wouldn't take on for her family. She also taught various crafts to neighbors and friends in "Busy Bees". She worked as a taxi driver and delivered newspapers. In 1982, Vivian returned to school to re-validate her Nursing Diploma. She worked at Four Winds Psychiatric Hospital in Katona, NY and Putnam County Hospital in Carmel, NY. Her last position was at the Victoria Home Nursing Home in Ossining, NY as Directress of Nursing. After the death of her first husband she retired to Ormond Beach, Florida. There she met and later married Donald Battersby. They enjoyed traveling extensively together. She became an avid garage sale "officianado". She served as a volunteer at Florida Health Care in Daytona Beach. Vivian was a masterful story teller who loved taking care of her family. She adored having adventures and treasure hunting every weekend with her daughters and granddaughter. She always kept up with the times with an inquisitive mind, remaining stylish and into the latest fashion trends to the last. She was kindhearted, generous and a wonderful mother and grandmother who will be sorely missed by her family, friends and those whose lives she touched. Vivian was pre-deceased by her parents, sister Arlene, two brothers, Ernest (Jane) and Albert (Mary Alice) Scharf, her two husbands and her eldest son, Barry. She is survived by her son, Paul (Marsha); daughters, Linda (Marco) and Barbara (Mike); her granddaughter, Renee; and her father, Joel; her granddaughter, Daron; and grandson, Devin. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Oceanside Memorial Hospice in Ormond Beach, Florida or the American Cancer Society. Memorial contributions may be made to either agency.
