Michele Byers Obituary

Michele Byers

Fordland - Michele Ann Byers, 58, of Fordland, passed away near her family's home on November 22, 2019. She has left a heartbroken and grieving family who appreciate your prayers for her soul.

She was born December 12, 1960 in Washington, Kansas the daughter of Matthew and Joan (Wenzl) Uhlik. She was united in marriage to Patrick Lee Byers in 1984.

Michele attended college in Salina, Kansas. She was a nurse primarily at Cox Hospitals and dedicated her life's work to caring for babies in the nursery and NICU. She spent her time off gathering and sewing items for donation kits for needy mothers of newborns. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, where she founded her parish's chapter of Our Lady's Rosary Makers, teaching rosary-making and making rosaries. She enjoyed quilting and spending time in her herb garden and was Patrick's helpmate in planting, growing, and harvesting at Byers Orchard, the family peach business.

She was a generous, nurturing, patient, and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Patrick; her four children, Adam, Elizabeth, Katherine, and Rachel; her six grandchildren, Joseph, Carita, Leander, Emiko, and two unborn grandbabies; her parents, Matt and Joan Uhlik; her three brothers, Christopher, Daniel, and Mark; her two sisters, Lisa and Susan; and many other relatives and friends.

A visitation will be held from 6 - 7 pm, with a Rosary service following at 7:00 pm Friday, November 29, 2019 at J.D. Lee and Sons Funeral Home, Rogersville.

A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, November 30, 2019 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Mansfield. Private burial will be at Easter Cemetery, Fordland.

I was thinking of Michele tonight and cannot believe it´s been almost two years since she went to heaven. I worked with Michele in the NICU. I would be coming off night shift and she would greet me with a smiling face ALWAYS! I can´t imagine feeling that good so early in the morning, full of energy and enthusiasm. Michele cherished her nursing career and her patients. She was very conscientious, always having questions and challenging me . I admired her greatly. I didn´t know of her life outside work until after her passing. I am also Catholic as she was and thought it was wonderful how she made time to be involved in making rosaries and helping newborn babies who were born in less fortunate situations. I wish now that I had known Michele better. I lost my brother Jerry 3 years ago this autumn, so I fully understand how fresh grief feels when it´s that time of the year once more. Please know that Michele is not forgotten by her co-workers. She is greatly loved and missed....and I will continue to pray for her and all of her beloved family.

I was fortunate to have made Micheles acquaintance when I went to work at Cox Health System. She was one of two nurses who assisted the doctors performing procedures in the nursery. Michele was capable of skillfully assisting multiple physicians at the same time. Her love of the babies was readily apparent with the tenderness in her touch.

Michele was also an excellent teacher and taught many of her peers as well as doctors. She was gentle and authoritative in her approach. Many of the Cox family practice residents benefitted from her knowledge.

I was blessed to have had some conversations while being assisted by her that lead to a wonderful friendship. We would go on to pick blueberries and peaches together on many summer days. She joyfully shared her love of sewing for the Newborns in Need program. My greatest joy in our friendship came when she extended invitations to her familys Christmas dinners.

There was never any doubt of what her family meant to Michele. The love she had for Patrick, Adam, Elizabeth, Katie, Rachel, her parents/siblings and in-laws was expressed every time we talked. I always knew what was going on with all of you. That is what made the invitations to your family gatherings SO special. To see you in person and watch Michele look upon you with such love was a gift that filled my heart.

Micheles love extended far beyond family and her work babies. She gathered friends like the fruits she harvested. Her warm smile, kind manner and heartfelt concern drew people to her. She constantly thought and did things for others. Her love of those friends was also manifested by inviting them into your home. Many of them also received coveted invitations to your family dinners.

Words are woefully inadequate to express my sympathy upon the loss of such a dear friend. My prayers and thoughts will be with you.

I had the pleasure of working with Michelle in the NICU at Cox. I am a travel nurse and she made me feel welcomed from the moment I met her. She was very kind to me. I knew immediately what a great nurse she was - always taking the time to explain things to parents in their scariest moments, comforting them and making them feel a part of the team. She loved the babies and had a sixth sense when something didn't seem right. I will always remember her kindness and her sweet smile. To all of her family and friends, I send my condolences and will continue to pray for your peace and comfort especially during the holidays without her.
