BURT MCGLYNN Obituary

BURT J. MCGLYNN

DECEMBER 23, 2011

Burton J. McGlynn, Age 88, of Greenwood and Captiva, FL, formerly of Edina passed away on December 23, 2011. Burton "Burt" J. McGlynn, former chairman of McGlynn Bakeries and current chairman of DecoPac, Inc., did many things in life, but the one thing that remained constant was his association with McGlynn Bakeries. For over fifty years, he played a vital role within the family-run business, and, at each stage, had seen opportunities that took the company to a new level. He is a true example of a Minnesota entrepreneur.

Minnesota enjoyed the well-known McGlynn Bakeries since 1919, when it was founded by Burt's father, James T. "J.T." McGlynn. Burt was born November 16, 1923, in Minneapolis, MN. He started working in his father's bakery at age 15 as a cleaner. He later filled in for bakers when they were on vacations, drove delivery trucks on wholesale routes and waited on customers at the service counter. During World War II, Burt attended cook's and baker's school in New Orleans and served in the Navy as a baker in the Philippines. After the war, Burt returned to Minnesota to help run his father's growing bakery business. At that time McGlynn's Bakery had 11 downtown shops and several wholesale routes. In 1948, he married Patricia Jones, with whom he had five children. Burt purchased the company from his father in 1956. In 1958, Burt decided to sell the business to Emrich Baking Company and worked for them as head of retail operations. After a few years with Emrich Baking, Burt saw an opportunity to open in-store bakeries in the new Target stores in the Twin Cities being developed by Dayton's Department Stores. He resigned from Emrich Baking Company, acquired his family's trade name and was in business again with his first two bakeries in the Knollwood and Crystal Target stores. By 1972, there were over 35 Target stores with in-store McGlynn's Bakery departments.

The business changed and expanded greatly. The company entered the frozen bakery products business, and eventually sold that business in 1992 to Pillsbury. Another frozen bakery products business was begun in 1995 and sold in 2004 to Ralcorp Holdings, Inc. Bakery plants were constructed in Eden Prairie, Chanhassen and Fridley and at one time employed over 2,000 people. The remaining family business, DecoPac, Inc. is the largest marketer of cake decorations to professional cake decorators in the world.

In addition to Burt's success in business, he was an avid sports participant, whether snow skiing, ice skating, fishing, boating or playing tennis and golf. He owned the Minnesota Buckskins World Team Tennis team and was a partner of the Minnesota Timberwolves. He was an avid fan of professional sports including hockey, tennis, baseball, football and basketball.

But most of all, Burt loved to be with people. He loved to spend time with family, friends, and employees. He had a contagious, friendly personality. He went out of his way to host events and make sure his guests were having a wonderful time. His funny stories and antidotes will be remembered by all that knew him. Like the baked goods his company made, Burt was made up of the perfect ingredients to be the best.

Burt graduated from DeLaSalle High School in 1941. He later chaired a capital campaign, was inducted into the school's hall of fame and named an affiliated Christian Brother. He attended Dunwoody Institute and received an honorary Doctorate of Philanthropy degree from St. Mary's University, Winona. Having philanthropic spirits, Burt and his wife, Rosalyn, have supported numerous charities in Minnesota and Florida. They spent the winters in Captiva Island, Florida, and the summers on Lake Minnetonka. He was a member of The Minneapolis Club, Interlachen Country Club, Lafayette Club, The Sanctuary Golf Club, and Captiva Island Yacht Club.

Burt was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mary, his first wife Patricia McGlynn, his brother Richard and his sisters Jean and Margaret. He is survived by his wife of thirteen years, Rosalyn, and his children Mike (Julie), Tim, Dan (Deb), Molly (Leo Varley) and Tom (Antoinette); his step-son Colby (Kara) and his step-daughter Melissa (Patrick); sixteen grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, ten great great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held 4:30-7:30 pm Wednesday, January 4, at Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 am on Thursday, January 5, at the Basilica of St. Mary, Hennepin Ave. at 17th St., Minneapolis, with visitation 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Interment Fort Snelling National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Catherine University.

Greetings,
I am 74 now.
Doing well.
Treasurer and sole musician at church.
Treasurer and board of directors of a wounded warriors group.

Retired since 59, because of the pension I earned while working at McGlynns. It was 21 years of continuos employment. Something I never experienced before hand, working seasonally in Northeast Minnesota.
So often, receiving those pension checks, I can't not think of McGlynns. Great memories!!!
We always moved the product through sun and snow storms.

I remember Burt walking through the bakery with a note book in his shirt pocket
When he saw a new employee, he asked them their name and jotted it down for him to remember. He then could greet them by name.
What a wonderful employer.
What a wonderful experience.
THANK YOU,

Greetings friends,
What a wonderful man, Burt. It is a welcome gift to spend a few minutes now with one of the greatest employers i ever had. At 70, i spend a lot of time looking back. BURT and McGLYNNS were so great for my 21,years there. Most secure job i ever had. And till I die, us truckers and dock workers enjoy a wonderful pension. We are taken care of for life. THANK YOU McGLYNNS. Because of McGLYNNS experience, afterwards in semi retirement i spent 5 years and 740,000 miles seeing this awesome country hauling new earthmoving equipment coast to coast. A lot of wonderful memories because of BURT.
THANK YOU FOREVER

McGlynn Bakeries gave me my first job in High School. I worked at the bakery in the Target store in Houston, TX. That job helped me pay for my first year in college and my first car. I graduated from Texas A&M University Magna Cum Laude and now have my own business. The opportunity at McGlynn Bakeries taught me many useful life lessons that I still rely on today. Thank you Burt McGlynn for helpong this girl become a productive, entrepreneur today.

To the McGlynn family,
Our daughter and sister Carrie Hafner was taken from us in a car accident in 1986. She had worked for McGlynn's Bakery at the Target store in Roseville. Soon after, Mr. McGlynn established 2 educational scholarships annually in Carrie's name at St. Bernard's High School(in St.Paul). Numerous students who would not have afforded such an education were able to attend St. Bernard's over a period of many years. Mr. McGlynn's generosity and philanthropy were never forgotten by the Hafner family. May your faith console you and reassure you that you will see Burton again. Thank you Mr. McGlynn for your thoughtfulness and caring ways. We will miss you also. And your family will be in our prayers.

With Appreciation,
The Bill & Gloria

Mike, Tom, Dan,
We are saddened to hear of the loss of your wonderful Dad, a Dad that so loved his sons.
Your delightful Dad, with his Irish Twinkle in his eyes, that welcomed everyone with such joy. Only your Dad, Bert, would have suggested that we have our Eden Prairie Eye Clinic in his Eden Prairie Bakery facililty to accommodate not only two young people starting out in practice, but to accommodate his beloved employees. What a breath of fresh air to turn around and see his big smile, offer to assist us with that twinkle in his eyes.
May God sustaing you with his gentleness, with fond memories to lift you up everyday. May you continue to share his legacy of love, kindness, with your children, his Grandchildren, and future generations to come!
Irish Blessings to you, his wonderful sons that he so loved.

Please accept our sincere condolences for Burt's passing. He was truly a highly respected business icon with a history that goes back as far as I can remember. To the family,
Burt hired me in 1963 when he opened the Target Crystal bakery. I was a part-time high school student. I learned much from that experience. He would make daily trips to check on everything... from the cleaniness of the displays to how you were doing. Burt was a great boss but even a better person. He really made a difference in many people's lives. I am deeply sorry for your loss.

Burt hired me in 1963 to work the front bakery counter at the new Target in Crystal. I worked for him through my college years. He was my very first and best boss. Every marking period, he wanted to know about my grades. He made sure that the teenagers working for him did well in school. When I went on the National Honor trip to NYC, he gave me a $10.00 bill and told me to enjoy my trip. That was a lot of money! Subsequently, my brother, George and my sister, Carrie worked for Burt. We have never forgotten his strong work ethic, kindness and sense of humor. He taught us how to be successful in the workplace. We all loved him. Our sympathy to the McGlynn family in their loss. He was a very special and wonderful man. We have wonderful memories of our time with !
