Alice Douglas Obituary

Alice Faye Douglas, 83, of Roseland, departed this life on Sunday, September 18, 2022, in Charlottesville, Va. Born in Nelson County, on June 18, 1939, she was a daughter and the last living child of the late Booker and Christine Carter Essex.

Alice was the beloved matriarch of the Douglas Family and an ever-unwavering presence. She was most lovingly referred to by many as, Aunt Faye or Grandma, and proudly earned the title of, "Queen of Sweet Potato Pies". Teaming up with her twin sister, Gladys, proved fruitful on many fronts. This dynamic duo was famous for creating lasting memories in others, especially through their culinary gifts. They were often boasted for having the best potato salad around. There was nothing these two couldn't do.

Alice was known for her outgoing and witty disposition. She was clever and quick-minded when it came to come backs and was never one to shy away from speaking her mind. She was one of a kind and will be missed by many family and friends.

Alice was also a dedicated member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Tyro, Va., where she served faithfully as a Deaconess for many years. She will always be remembered for saying how much she loved her church family and her pastor, The Rev. Dr. H. Annette Diggs.

She leaves to cherish her memories, a son, Larry Douglas (Tracy); two grandchildren, Latoya Henson and Minister Barry L. Douglas Jr. (Shamika); four great-grandchildren, Ta'Nya Henson, Gary Henson Jr. "Lil G", Talasia Henson, and Josiah Douglas; one much anticipated great-granddaughter, baby Jayla Brielle Douglas due in December; a brother-in-law, Charlie Lee; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, she is now reunited with many loved ones, including her son, Barry L. Douglas Sr.; her three sisters, Margaret Essex Turner, Gladys Essex Lee, and Mary Essex Johnson; and her two brothers, Robert Essex and Thomas Essex.

A Celebration of Life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, October 1, 2022, at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home by Bishop George Gohanna, Officiating, and the Rev. Dr. H. Annette Diggs, Eulogist. Burial will follow in The Carter Family Cemetery. Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family thanks each of you for all acts of kindness and condolences, and requests that those wanting to send memorial contributions please mail to, 5156 Patrick Henry Hwy., Roseland, VA 22967.
