Ann Hutter Obituary

Ann Carter Hutter

Ann Carter Hutter, 80, died at Chippenham Hospital in Richmond, VA on September 21, 2024, with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her parents, Leola Carter Hutter and Malcolm Hutter; and her brother-in-law, H. McCord "Mac" Blankenship.

Born at Virginia Baptist Hospital in Lynchburg, Ann Carter spent her earliest summers at Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest, her grandfather's home at the time. She attended Garland Rodes and was a 1962 graduate of E.C. Glass High School, where she was voted Most Athletic. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Greensboro College in 1966 and her Master's degree in Teaching from the University of Virginia. Ann Carter was a die hard Cavaliers fan and was proud of her orange and blue vehicles, including her Mini Cooper convertible and her customized Corvair Greenbrier van, which she often took to football games at Scott Stadium. She also had a Corvair Rampside truck, which she painted maroon and gold in honor of the Redskins, and was thrilled to attend a couple of games at Fedex field (when it didn't break down on the way).

After completing graduate school, Ann Carter began teaching mathematics at Stuart Hall (where she was known as "A.C.") in Staunton, VA in 1968. She became the Assistant to the Headmaster in 1976, until she returned to Lynchburg in 1978 and began her career as a computer programmer at Babcock & Wilcox (now Framatome). She was promoted to supervisor and loved her B&W family, but being the entrepreneur-minded woman she was, she branched out on her own and started her own company in 1987. A.C. Hutter Company offered customized software solutions to clients across the region until she retired in 2016. She began dabbling in eBay sales in 2004 as a hobby and very quickly became a power seller, always enjoying wheeling and dealing. Additionally, she and her friends ran a small business from 2010-14, selling wares at antique malls in Lexington, Verona, and Roanoke. After spending the majority of her life in Lynchburg, Ann Carter moved with her family to Bon Air, VA in 2022.

Although she never had children of her own, she gained custody of her niece in 1982 and thought of her as her own daughter. She was a doting mother, always making holidays and birthdays extra special. She attended every play, dance recital, symphonic band concert, tournament, and halftime marching band performance, no matter the weather or distance. Her dedication continued when her granddaughter was on the travel soccer team, and she rarely missed a match.

Some of Ann Carter's best memories included trips with her daughter to California, the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico (where she had her 54th birthday), and the Caribbean Islands. She spoke fondly of her road trip across Europe in the 1970s and travels with her mother around the country. She was also an avid pool player, often found in the '90s at the Cavalier Store, holding her own with the locals. She was an avid collector of all things Corvair, notably having nine Corvairs at once in the 1980s and serving as the Roanoke Valley Corvair Club president. Naturally, she created a software called VairMATE that enabled the club to register attendees of Corvair conventions that she helped run. Ann Carter also collected colorful watches, eclectic hats, Elvis memorabilia, all things Mini Cooper, and especially her bourbon. She had a charismatic personality and wore bright, colorful clothes because she was not one to go unnoticed.

Ann Carter is survived by her daughter, Ann Barbour Iñiguez; and two grandchildren, Yesenia Iñiguez and Valentin Iñiguez. Also surviving are her sister, Betty Mac Hutter Blankenship; her feline companions, Jezebelle and Isabelle; and several cousins and dear friends.

To honor Ann Carter's wishes, there will be no calling hours or services. An open house will be held on Saturday, October 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. at 9644 Benbow Road in Richmond, where family and friends are asked to have a drink and share stories in her memory. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Lynchburg Humane Society or Stuart Hall School.

AC was one of my favorite teachers ever, and remains my go-to example of what a difference a great teacher can make. Before I entered her classroom, algebra was just the sound of grownups talking in a Charlie Brown special - totally unintelligible. After she made math make sense, I stopped fearing it and even doubled up senior year. For an eventual history/French major, that´s saying a lot. I´m so sorry to hear of her passing, but I can´t help smiling as I think of her - she made us smile so often!

My favorite teacher at Stuart Hall! Without her tutoring me in Geometry, I would´ve failed. So, I joined many Stuart Hall girls in needing her help with math; She was so patient and kind!

She also took Jamie (my twin sister), Lockhart Ledbetter and me to Afton Mountain to learn how to ice skate!! What a hoot! Jamie agrees that that trip with Miss Hutter was the best.

My husband and I moved to Lynchburg in 2002, and I worked at E. C. Glass as one of the librarians. I often thought of her, knowing that she had graduated from there.

Thank you, Miss Hutter, for being so wonderful, supportive and fun-to-be-with person that you are, and always were.
The world is a grayer place without you in it.

Best math teacher I ever had. Actually the best teacher I ever had. Period. She was also one of our dorm mothers. She had a contraband kitty and we loved keeping her secret

AC was one of my absolute favorite teachers at Stuart Hall even though math was my absolute worst subject! One of my fondest memories is sitting in the old wooden chairs in the auditorium, with beautiful snow falling, taking my Algebra 1 exam freshman year which AC was proctoring. As she made her rounds she stopped and glanced at my answers and quietly asked if I had another exam I could be studying for. When I answered yes, she plucked my papers up and excused me since it was evident I wasn't going to pass. She patiently got me through the course though, always praising my skills in other subject areas to make me feel better, but she was such a great teacher I really wanted to bend my brain to "get it" but being an English major was my destiny. She was a great mentor, seriously dedicated but with a wonderful sense of humor and a lot of spunk! Cheers to you AC!

Ann Carter and I were schoolmates at Garland-Rodes and E.C. Glass. She was a Lynchburg icon!

Ann Carter was my math teacher at Stuart Hall. My love of math grew with each class she taught and it was my college major. She inspired and challenged me. And she had the best sense of humor!

Ann Carter was one of my counselors at Camp Ruthers, in 1959. I enjoyed knowing her that summer. It sounds like she´s had a most interesting and enjoyable life. Rest in Peace, Ann Carter.

My favorite teacher by far at Stuart Hall . She made me feel capable and gave me the encouragement I needed. I feel she played a pivotal role in building my self esteem. I´m sorry to hear she is gone but surely not forgotten.

Wow, where to begin? My algebra, trig teacher at Stuart Hall. Math was my WORST subject, but AC tutored me & a few others on the side; pretty sure that side of my brain has never worked like she thought it could...she tried really hard and I DID pass, however the challenge probably required bourbon! Fond memories of a trip to see Cavaliers, her being our "chaperone" to OBX senior trip, and one Thanksgiving that I had to stay at SH for Thanksgiving....we all cooked a beautiful turkey at her place, then discovered we left that plastic bag inside?! She looked at me, grabbed the bag, threw it in trash & said don't say a WORD! ...hysterically laughing! Safe travels AC, Go Cavaliers!

Ann Carter was my freshman college roommate. I tried to find her in Lynchburg just this last July when visiting the area. Makes me sad that we never reconnected. Bless her and her family.

AC was my math teacher at Stuart Hall. I hated math and was terrible at doing anything with numbers. The first day I walked in to her class, she said "I´ll prove to you anyone can do math". I went on to take algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. More importantly, AC gave me confidence me confidence in myself.
