Wood Morcom Obituary

Wood Lee Morcom, Jr., 98, of Madison Heights, passed away, Saturday, May 18, 2024 at Runk & Pratt Assisted Living. He was the husband of the late Willie "Billie" Raikes Morcom.

Born August 2, 1925 in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Wood Lee Morcom, Sr. and Beulah Brown Morcom. He was also preceded in death by his son, Bobby Lee Morcom and a great-grandson, Camden Sullenger.

Wood was retired from the U.S. Air Force, where he proudly served during World War II and Korea. He also retired after 18 years from the Amherst County Sheriff's Office. Wood was a member of the 7 Hills Trailer Club, the Virginia State Sheriff's Association and was a past President of Izaak Walton League of Lynchburg. He was a member of Union Christian Church.

Wood was married to Billie for 70 years and was so supportive in her battle with Alzheimer's as she was to him as they traveled for the military for 20 years. He loved God, his family, his church, his camping friends, and serving his country and community.

Wood is survived by his daughter, Sandra Davis Nichols and husband, Tim of Lynchburg; a brother, Frank R. "Ronnie" Morcom and wife Betty of Madison Heights and Edna Morcom, daughter-in-law, of Madison Heights; three grandchildren, Chris Davis (Teresa), Brianne Sullenger (Ben), and Lauren Harrell (Chris); one step-grandson, Brad Nichols (Allison); five great-grandchildren, Skyler, Claire, Colson, Alexis, and Carson; two step-great-grandchildren, Susanna and Jack; numerous special nieces and nephews. Wood was also survived by a special friend, Cathie Eubank.

A funeral service to celebrate Wood's life will be conducted at 1 p.m., Thursday, May 23, 2024, at Whitten Monelison Chapel with Pastor Dwayne Carson and Pastor Jim Freeman officiating. Interment with military honors by the U.S. Air Force Honors Team will follow at Meade Cemetery in Madison Heights.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at Whitten Monelison Chapel.
