Adelaide D. Woodward

WOODWARD - Adelaide D., born in Brooklyn, and raised on Long Island, died on Saturday, December 5, 2009, in West Chester PA. She was 81. Wife of Ronald E. Woodward, with whom she shared 55 years of marriage, and daughter of Robert and Daisy Stephenson Doyle, both of whom emigrated to this country from Ireland near the turn of the last century. A graduate of Cornell University (1949), Adelaide worked for Sperry Gyroscope Company until her marriage, and then became a stay at home mom active in cultural affairs. She was the President of the Henry Hicks Garden Club of Westbury, New York, and a director of the Affiliated Garden Clubs of Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and won many awards in show competitions. She was also a Girl Scout leader for many years. She served on the Altar Guild for St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Carle Place, and for the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City. As her children got older she embaked on a successful new career as a Law firm office billing and bookkeeping manager, at Congdon, Flaherty & O'Callaghan in Garden City. She and Ronald retired to West Chester, PA in 1996, after she suffered a serious fall. A well beloved and talented woman, wife, mother, companion and friend, Adelaide particularly enjoyed long walks, impressionist paintings, family reunions, especially at the family camp in the Adirondack mountains, travel, and weeping along with "Madame Butterfly". Adelaide is survived by her husband, her daughters Robin Woodward of New York City and Anne Woodward Lydon, of Devon Pennsylvania, her son-in-law Joseph Lydon and her grand-children Megan and Joseph Lydon. Her beloved son John Woodward preceded her in death in 2007. Relatives and friends are invited to her Funeral Service 2:00pm, Friday, December 11, 2009 at the Church of the Holy Trinity, 212 S. High St. West Chester, PA. 19380. Visitation will be held at the chuch on Friday from 1-2:00pm. Interment will be 2pm, Saturday, December 12, 2009 at Oakwood Cemetery, Bay Shore, NY.
