Henrietta Gersten-Liebowitz Obituary

Gersten-Liebowitz - Henrietta "Hedy", (a.k.a. Hedy O'Beil), was born in New York City on October 20, 1928. She passed away in her sleep Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at age 93 on Long Island. She will be remembered as a kind, loving Mom and Grandma, and a well-known and accomplished abstract artist! Hedy received two prestigious awards from the Jackson Pollock - Lee Krasner Foundation, in 2009 and 2014. Her over 70 solo and group art exhibits during her career were impressive, including exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art, NYC, Philadelphia Art Museum, Heckscher Museum of Art & Guild Hall on Long Island, Susquehanna Art Museum, Harrisburg, PA, Westbeth Gallery, and the Landmark Gallery, NYC. She worked for years as an art museum tour guide, especially for the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art. She also was an art reviewer for several arts magazines. She studied at several highly regarded art schools, including Brooklyn Museum Art School, with Reuben Tam, the Skowhegan School of Art, ME, and the Art Students League in NY, with Ernest Fiene and Harry Sternberg, and received her Master's Degree from Goddard College, Montpelier, VT. She continued painting until she was 90 years old. She is survived by her sons, Seth Jay (Xiaobo LaPresta) and Josh Ethan (Gwen); and their children, Jason, Jared (Lindsay Hammon); Liann, and Cara Liebowitz; and Mae (Ryan Rowland). She was predeceased by her only brother, Gerry Gersten, a very well-known illustrator. Her legacy continues, as her next solo exhibit is scheduled at the Hoyt Art Center, New Castle, PA, September - November 2023. A celebration of Hedy's life has been scheduled.

Hedy was serious fellow artist of the Abstract school. We were friends, and we exhibited our art
together at several New York City galleries. A dear friend who I miss. Helen Levin

Hedy gave her finest art as her legacy to the world; Now, her memory will live on and on. Her paintings are treasures! To me, art conveys feeling, and Hedy's paintings express deep emotion with every stroke from her brush.

Peace be with you and your family.

It's with deep sadness that I read my dear colleague Hedy O'Beil passed away last month. I met Hedy while waiting for a bus going downtown Manhattan and we struck up a conversation regarding art. I was unemployed at the time and Hedy offered to me by my assisting her in re-configuring her website and occasionally posting new images of her colorful paintings. In addition to this I accompanied her in "gallery hopping" in mid-town Manhattan and Greenwich Village and would occasionally drop by her Westbeth Studio to see her latest work & chat. I had the pleasure of seeing her later at exhibitions of her work at the Broome Street Gallery, 307 Gallery and the Carter Burden Gallery across the street from were I worked. Although, sadly, she is no longer with us, her work and legacy remains.
