Stephen Joel Shafer

SHAFER-Stephen Joel, died unexpectedly on September 14, 2004, He was a beloved colleague and friend and Professor of Biology and Natural Sciences at Dowling College for more than 30 years. Steve was a leader at the College and in the faculty union Dowling College Chapter of NYSUT. He was a past president and successfully negotiated many contracts, including this last one beginning September 1, 2004. Steve was also a founder of the Faculty Scholarship Fund and embodied the College's motto: Learning, Wisdom and Compassion. Steve received his BA from Haverford College, MS from the University of Pennsylvania and Ph.D. from Temple University. His wise counsel, unflappable demeanor and respect for others brought people together and bridged differences in may arenas. Steve was a kind, good, generous and wise man. We are all better people because he touched us--his colleagues, friends and students. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Our sincerest condolences to his wife, Gail and daughter, Cindy.
