I was just looking up Father Tim because I´m approaching my nine year wedding anniversary and I wanted to send him an update on my family. Father Tim was the military chaplain that married my husband and I. He did so after we were denied services by another priest because he didn´t feel we knew each other well or long enough. Father Tim worked with to specialize our marriage preparation because we could not be together to attend traditional preparations due to military separation and duty requirements. He went above and beyond for us and I will never forget him. When he met us the at wedding we joked that he was meant to be our priest because my husband and I are both a few inches over 6 feet tall and we all looked eye to eye. He danced an Irish step dance at our wedding banquet that left my Irish grandmother and her sisters smiling from ear to ear. He sat next to her at the dinner, which made her the proudest woman in the room. It´s been 9 years, 2 children, several military deployments/moves, a few promotions, and we are happier than we were the day we got married. Thank you for believing in us, Father Tim. We will never forget you and your kindness, joy, and love.

To the entire Hirten Family,
My deepest condolences on the loss of Fr. Tim. I went to St. John the Baptist with Tim and he was always one of the "nice guys", friendly to everyone! I remember how shocked we all were when SJB hosted the first Talent Contest and FR. Tim and his older brother took to the stage and wowed us all with their Irish Step Dancing. It was not something we expected from our star basketball player! I saw Fr. Tim at I believe our 30th class reunion and he was charming and entertaining with stories and memories the entire evening. I am sure Fr. Tim did an Irish Jig as he entered those pearly gates of Heaven as Our Lord welcomed him home with a "Well done my faithful servant". RIP FR Tim

I am beyond devastated to hear of Father Hirten’s passing. I had the privilege to work with him at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst during his tenure there and his energy, exuberance and heart for giving was beyond compare. I counted him a friend and feel his passing deeply. To his family- the support and dedication he provided to our troops impacted more lives than you can know.

I was a contractor in Middle East when Fr. Tim was deployed as the Catholic Chaplain in 2015. He immediately hit it off with Filipinos attending his mass as he would share with them his days playing basketball as an import player with the Philippine Basketball Association before he entered the seminary. I left for a brief break to the US late 2015 but was not able to go back due to an illness. We reunited in March of 2016 when he returned to his unit in NJ and celebrated it with a dinner my family and a mutual friend. As usual he would insist it his treat. We promised each other we would meet again after I fully recover from my health condition.
I was devastated to hear about his unexpected passing. May he rest in peace!

Fr. Tim was a great Priestly figure at JBMDL..During my active years there and finally as a retiree who worked shortly as his Catholic Community Coordinator, he always kept me focused on the Mass as my most important priority..He led the way with all social community activities that I couldn't even plan --We were great spiritual companions and he even concelebrated my wedding at a local Parish..What a great person, Priest, Air Force Officer..Greatly loved and missed..

Fr. Tim was an all star in all that he touched. I’ve known Tim since our seminary days in Rome. We played basketball on the Angelicum team that Tim organized. (He averaged about 50 points a game against Italian semi pro teams.). In these past 20 years with his meager earnings he faithfully supported my missionary efforts in Russia and India. I will bring him to the altar and lift him up to our Blessed Savior at Holy Mass!!!

Dave and I worked with Reverend Hirten in Altus, OK as members of the Protestant chapel. He was the first Catholic priest after many years without one. Everyone loved him and were blessed by his love for God. Thank you to his family for sharing him with us.

Back in the days when college campuses where alive with all kinds of activities, especially at Steubie U, Tim remained a solid citizen, friend to all and a beacon of light he would become. I regret having lost touch with this
exemplary Christian soldier. RIP my friend.

The world will be at a loss without Father Tim. We would often swap Air Force stories. As cousins, we would meet at different family events over the years. I will miss our too occasional E-mail messages. While I am confident he is in a better place, we have all been cheated by his early departure.

Even thought he was only at Sheppard AFB TX one year he made such a big happy place in our church. He took us on trips, feed us with bunches of goodies. Start a Spanish and Italian mass. He will greatly missed. Our heart ❤ is broken. We pray for Father Tim and his family. God bless all and may you find peace.

I was deployed to Iraq in 2007 and Fr. Hirten was our chaplain. We spent a lot of time preparing for masses (he conducted multiple masses during the weekends) and ministering to different nationalities working on the base. We used to go to the Romanian compound to deliver building materials for their makeshift Orthodox chapel. They don't have much but Father Hirten salvaged a lot of materials that Americans threw away. They welcomed him freely. Father Hirten performed the service when 3 Romanians died from an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
The best story I had about him was when he wanted to celebrate Christmas Day mass in front of Abraham's house close to the Ziggurat in the city of Ur. It was just outside our base. Everybody wanted to join in, including some high-ranking officials in Bagdad. It got so big that the garrison commander had to put a halt on it because of security. I remember Fr. Hirten saying that he wanted to celebrate mass there because the Pope then was not able to visit the sacred place.
Please accept my condolences for your loss. He will be missed terribly.
Eternal rest grant unto Fr. Timothy Hirten, O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.

I remember how Timmy and the Hirten family were our neighbors in the Greatest Neighborhood that anyone could grow up in the late 50's into 70's on Beverly Parkway in Valley Stream, NY.
Our parents instilled in all of us the values and virtues of the Catholic Church and treating everyone like family!
So many fond memories of Timmy , Fr. Tim and sitting on their basement staircase watching and waiting for them to finish their Irish Step Dancing practice so we could all go out and play Stickball or Wiffle Ball!❤
To all of the Hirten Family I am truly sorry for your loss of your brother Fr. Tim.
He was an inspiration to all of us on Beverly Parkway and the entire neighborhood growing up as kids as well as his Devotional Career in the Church.
Sincerely,
Robert E. Lee

Fr Tim was one of the best priests we ever had at Dover AFB. He was highly involved in the parish and did the Catholic Sports camp a couple of years, and included Irish dance as one of the sport options. My family missed him when he left, and I wish I had kept in touch with him. It is a great loss for many people. My sympathies to the family

Dear Michael, Robert, Terence, Maureen, Nancy and the entire Extended Hirten Family,
I am so saddened by the loss of your brother. It was an absolute honor to be a crew member on the American Airlines flight (#794) entrusted with escorting the Major and brother Knight of Columbus from CLT-JFK yesterday evening. Announcing his arrival at the gate not only brought much solemn respect for your storied hero gentlemen, but tears as well.
I am certain he is in the Light of the Lord at this very moment and looking down smiling on each of you. I ask the Good Lord to give all of you the necessary Grace to carry you through this most difficult time and pray that Our Father Bless each and every one of you.
Sincerely,
Sir Knight Gary J. Traube
