David Slater Obituary

Beloved husband, father, brother and friend, David Thomas Slater, passed away Sept. 16, 2018, after a long and courageous fight to live with a heart transplant done in 1997. He outlived all expectations because of his strong character and will, combined with the skilled medical care he received throughout his life. He was the miracle man.
Born May 24, 1944, in Nebraska City, Missouri, his parents moved with him when he was 6 to Anchorage, then on to CAA field stations in Nenana and Cordova before settling in Fairbanks when Dave was 14. Dave regaled us all with many stories of his childhood adventures in these wonderful places that helped to shape him. After graduating from Lathrop High School in 1962, he attended UAF while pursuing many hobbies. He was a multitalented man who was a master bass guitar player in a number of Fairbanks bands. The last band he was a part of was named "Paradox" because as a rock 'n' roll band it was unusual to have the city mayor, the city attorney and the advertising director of the News Miner as members. He was known as a skilled mechanic who could work on and fix almost anything. He also loved and owned many boats, both to run the rivers of the Interior and fish the waters of Valdez and Kachemak Bay.
Dave married Carol Cuffel, an Anchorage-
born girl, and they began a 50-year union sharing many adventures while raising their two sons, Darren and Matt. Dave was, above all, a loving and devoted husband and father. During 35 of those years he worked at the Daily News-
Miner,
first selling and creating display ads, then moving up to become the advertising director. Dave's staff not only respected his abilities, but also considered his fairness, integrity and professionalism to be exemplary.
He is survived by his loving wife, Carol; his brothers-in-law, Greg Hendrie and family, Don Cuffel and family, and David Cuffel and family; his sister-in-law, Dee Okane, and family; his Aunt Darlene Banasik and Uncle Harry Yungschlager; nephews, Chris Carroll and family, and Kevin Carroll and family; as well as his 93-year-old stepfather-in-law and ex-governor of Alaska, Keith Miller. Dave was preceded in death by sons, Darren and Matthew Slater; sisters, Gail Hendrie and Sara Carroll; his parents, Don and Helen Slater; and mother- and father-in-law, Jean Miller and Bill Cuffel.
Dave was an extraordinarily kind and gifted man who we all will miss dearly. The past few months of his life were difficult for health reasons, so we send him onto a place of peace, comfort and happiness. Our world is a lesser place without him.
A celebration of Dave's life will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, upstairs at the Elks Lodge, 1003 Pioneer Road. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Dave's name to The Greater Fairbanks Community Hospital Foundation. Condolences may be sent to 1143 Bainbridge Blvd., Fairbanks, AK 99701.

The last time I saw Dave was in 2001. I paid a surprise visit to the News-Miner. I had been working on the Slope and was just out of going through a shutdown after the September 11 incident. Dave was so surprised and delighted! He was sitting with the Advertising Director of the classifieds. He yelled out "Bar the doors. The best damn salesperson I ever had is here." I was delighted. He hadn't changed, and it's true, I was.

His former boss, whose position he took over after Foster had retired, hired me on a whim. They gave me a list that hadn't been worked in 6 months and was generating $30K a month in income. Within 4 months, I was billing $80K, and after 6 months, it was $120K. I became the top salesperson after a year and a half. I loved that job and worked about 60+ hours a week. I designed and wrote most of the ads. My background was in advertising, primarily working for small agencies. My clients loved me and I loved them. Unfortunately, I got burned out and went to work for a TV station. Mistake of my life but it got me into a great profession working in industrial construction which did me well for 30+ years.

Dave was one of the best bosses I ever had. I respected him and enjoyed working for him. I had free reign to do as I wished and made him proud. Won a couple of awards. It was a great run!

I will never forget when he broke the news to all of us about his heart. This energetic, fantastic man had to slow way down. We were sad. We loved listening to his hunting and camping stories, and about how he worked in his greenhouse to grow an apple tree. What a great guy! His orbit reached far and he never met a stranger.

Dave was my boss at The FDNM. I adored him! Before Dave became the Ad Mgr we sat across from each other and chatted while we worked. Dave never met a stranger and he was the epitome of a man with many talents. A great person and the best boss. It was a pleasure to go to work every day. Dave's spirit will live on in our hearts.
With love and sympathy,
Whitney

I just today discovered this. The last time I saw my former boss was in 2001. I adored Dave. When he was Assistant Manager of the News-Miner advertising dept. I sat across from him. We would have great discussions peaking under our upper shelves. I left the FSNM in 1988 to work in TV sales. Big mistake. I missed my boss who had become our manager.

When I was finished working a stint on the Alyeska Pipeline (major career change), the first place I stopped was to see Dave. He was talking to one of his reps and when he recognized me he shouted out, "Bar the doors! Whitney's back and we need her." Then he went on to boast I was the best salesperson he ever had. I don't know about that but I do know it was a pleasure to work for him and I enjoyed going to work every day.

I was there when Dave found out about his heart. We were all stunned. Mister sportsman with a wonky heart? It was a blow to all of us. I am glad he was valiant and never gave up until he could go no more. That is the epitome of our David! He never met a stranger and loved by many.

Dave was as kind and gentle as anyone I ever met. I have always admired his ability to accept his medical situation with a sense of calm and faith. I am so very sad to hear of his death. We are all diminished because he is no longer with us on earth. God bless him and God bless Carol. I trust we all will be reunited in the Great Beyond.

I am so sorry to hear of Dave's passing. My ex husband worked with Dave and so I knew his from the News Miner. When my daughter died January 1, 2001, he was featured in her death notice because Kelly was an organ donor. I am so sorry for your loss and am so thankful for the wonderful man he was and that he was a part of my life. Condolences to his family. God has acquired a blessed angel.
