Michael Wien Obituary

Michael Noel Wien, our beloved son, brother and uncle, passed away unexpectedly in Seattle, Washington, on Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017. He was preparing to fly home to Alaska that evening after a great ski vacation with friends.
Michael, 52, was born on Oct.14, 1964, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Fairbanks, to Richard and Sally (O'Neill) Wien. He attended Barnette Elementary, Tanana Junior High and West Valley High School, graduating in 1982, "the best class ever!" He earned his bachelor's degree in communications and marketing from the University of Arizona in 1987 and was a proud member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.
Growing up in Fairbanks with his sisters Kelly and Leslie on the hill off Farmers Loop, and then at Harding Lake, was special. A lot of time was spent outside, planning, building creating, plus doing all the things you could do with an old snowmachine, and a little boat with a 7.5 motor, towing each other on water skis, playing with a deck of cards and some imagination. Those memories and traditions from childhood carried him forward into all aspects of his life. He was so proud to be from Fairbanks and to have the parents and history that he did. He shared his love of Alaska with friends from around the world, at times bringing them home, and leading the way with his charm, humor and persistence.
Michael earned his pilot's license in 1988, and for a short while was a commercial pilot for Frontier Flying Service in Fairbanks. He always had an affinity for travel and a love of business, inspired by his grandfathers William A. O'Neill and Noel Wien, and most importantly by his father, Richard. He loved to fly with his dad, having the privilege to go to lakes and rivers all over the state growing up. In 1999, he and his father flew a Stearman open cockpit biplane from Seattle to Fairbanks mostly in a snowstorm. They brought the Stearman to Alaska, so his dad and uncle Merrill could re-enact the flight Noel Wien made from Anchorage to Fairbanks in 1924. The reenactment was done in July 1999 by landing and taking off from the Park Strip in downtown Anchorage and flying to Fairbanks. Michael was thrilled to be a part of the re-enactment.
Michael worked his entire life in the visitor and travel industry. He began as a bellman at the Travelers Inn/Westmark. Then, in 1983, he worked as a tour guide for Westours/Grayline, sharing his history and love for the state and family with his passengers. He then spent almost 20 years with Holland America Cruises, ultimately as director of international sales. He worked very hard to provide the best customer service and attention to detail that his travelers deserved, and fostered that in his employees and co-workers. He spent significant time in the Carribean and traveled around the world, making lifelong friends and always sending postcards home.
In 2011, Holland America reorganized, so Mike moved home for the summer, to stay in one time zone for a while, reacquaint himself with his hometown, and spend time with his niece and nephews. In 2012, he moved to Sitka to work at Alaskan Dream Cruises as vice president of marketing. After four years of helping the company expand exponentially, he took the job of vice president of sales and marketing for Ravn Alaska based in Anchorage. He quickly set to work using the skills he had acquired throughout his career; fulfilling his desire to continue in the transportation and visitor industry while staying close to aviation. While living in Anchorage, and with periodic visits to his house in Seattle, Michael made many long-lasting friends. He touched so many lives and was loved by so many.
Mike had a passion for the state of Alaska. He loved everything about it. Coke Wallace, his high school classmate, college roommate and friend said, "Mike's church is Alaska." And Mike is heading home.
Michael was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Noel and Ada Wien; his maternal grandparents, William A. (Bill) O'Neill and Violet O'Neill; and his aunt, Jean Rozanski.
Michael is survived by his loving parents, Richard and Sally Wien; sisters, Kelly Wien and Leslie Wien Hajdukovich; brother-in-law, Bob Hajdukovich, nephews and niece, Nicholas Hajdukovich, Alec Hajdukovich, Connor Hajdukovich, Neill Toelle and Anya Toelle; uncle, Merrill Wien (Barbara); uncle, Bill O'Neill (Patti); aunt, Maureen O'Neill; cousins, Dona Rozanski, Robyn Gunderson, Loren Rozanski, Kim Wien, Kurt Wien, Kent Wien, Christina Audette and Patrick O'Neill; Fairbanks relatives, Bonnie and Tom Roberts, Chad, Becky, and Max and their families, plus many extended family members throughout Alaska and the Lower 48.
There will be a celebration of life for Michael from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at Raven Landing. Please come and share stories and celebrate Mike with us. In lieu of gifts, please donate on Michael's behalf to the UAF School of Management or the Harry and Sally Porter Heart Center.

I'm shaking, tears are rolling down my face. Mike has been on my mind so much lately after many years. Today I see on the DeLijn group website he has passed. We worked together in the Public Relations department at Holland America Line. He was my buddy, mentor and new ship inaugural colaborator. We laughed a lot and shared many fun times over the years. He was well liked by everyone, and worked so hard at everything he took on.
I remember giving him rides home so he didn't have to walk in the dark and rain. I love you Mike! I hope you are soaring with the eagles!

I had the privilege of working with Mike at Alaskan Dream Cruises. His contacts in the industry and, more importantly, the trust they had in him, were a huge asset in the development of that start-up company. His love of Alaska and his unwavering commitment to a high standard of service were a potent combination! He was fun to be aroun, and he was funny. He's left a big hole in the lives of many people. My deepest sympathy and condolences to his family.

I knew Michael in college, and the funny thing about Michael he would always stay in touch. It might be 5 years and he would call and say "I have a layover in Chicago want to get lunch" not everyone is like that, but Mike was, the kind of friend that stayed in touch. He was funny, sweet man, I'm glad I knew him. This is a photo from a fraternity formal.

I worked with Michael for many years in and out of his different jobs working with travel agents. He is most responsible for educating me on ADC. He was such a sweetheart and fun gentle soul. So shocking to learn of his passing. My best to his parents who he loved and spoke of all the time.

Many memories from Mike in Seattle. Met him about 1998. We spent so many fun times at Matt and Wade's cabin outside of Cle Elum, Washington Skied with him at Whistler celebrating New Years Eve 2000; joined him and 6 others for a Holland America cruise in Alaska. So many memories from that trip, particularly the helicopter trip up to the glacier and our fun at The Piano Bar with Angie. Lost touch after I moved from Seattle to Vt and he moved back to Alaska. So sad. A life cut short for someone so full of life. My condolences to all his family and those close to him.

Of all my chums I recollect from college days at UAF - I will always remember sitting through Accounting 101 with you and trying to figure out just what the heck the professor was talking about. You were kind and funny - I will always remember that about you. Many years later I ran into you when you worked for Holland America - you were still kind and funny. Be at peace.

I love you Mike! I regret that we didn't carry out our childhood friendship into adulthood. Sounds like you were as awesome an adult as you were my buddy as a kid. It was fun to read about another gal that competed with you on places where you traveled. We did that as kids remember? Lol I'd go home at night and we'd see how much money we could make out of paper before morning. You always won. I can see you using that competitiveness to find your place in Heaven! Look forward to seeing you there someday. Love you!

I cant even believe I am writing this, for you are gone way to soon. What a loss for this beautiful mans family and friends. If you were still here, I would tell you I love the way you make me laugh and your silliness. I love your selection of music and the way you sing show tunes. I would thank you for being an awesome travelmate, and now you have gone and travelled without me. Who will I compete with to see who has more Alaska Air miles and higher status? Who will I ever ask about ideas regarding work? I will miss your face, your voice and your saunter, your wit and humor. You taught me so much about Sitka and your zest for life about Alaska was intoxicating. I hope that you knew just how much I appreciated our friendship. Thank you Michael for the gifts that you showed me. You will be missed dearly.

To Sally, Richard and the entire Wien family,

In the few years I had the good fortune to be one of Mike's marketing & sales colleagues at Allen Marine and Alaska Dream Cruises, we became very good friends. He set a fine example for how to conduct business with honor and style, and to take time to really enjoy the friendship of all the great folks we have the opportunity to work with in such a great industry and in this beautiful place. Mike is gone way too soon, that is for sure, but the huge positive impact he had on so many of us stands as clear evidence that the quality of his life was tremendous.

To Mike's parents, extended family, and friends around the world. Please accept my deepest condolences during this sad time.

I knew Mike as a friend and coworker for much of the past 15 years - he spoke of all of you fondly and often. In recent years his stories shifted dramatically as he reconnected with his home state and spent more time in Fairbanks. There were too many proud stories for me to remember: always including his parents - my tearful sympathies to both of you.

Then there were the tales of the cabin, the flights, the snowmachines and the kids' hockey games. I recall a few of his lifelong friends sounded much more mischievous in their youth than you seem to me today! But that was Mike's way - always one to draw people together for business or friendship.

Thank you for sharing Mike with us in life, and now this week as we travel to mourn together in Fairbanks. May a lifetime of warm and loving memories comfort each of you during this difficult time.

With love from Anchorage.

My condolences to the entire Wein family. During this time of such a great loss I can only feel your sorrow for your beloved son, relative, and friend.

I first met Michael in the early 1980s at the Westmark Hotel. I also encountered him numerous times while doing tours in Alaskan between the late 80s and 90s. I then became to really know and I understand Mike while he was employed by Holland American cruise lines. I attended many seminars when Mike was director of International Travel and was amazed at his wealth of knowledge in the tourism industry. Michael also introduced us to the product Alaska dream cruises which we work with him and started a new program thanks to his knowledge about Alaska and the inside passage.

Myself, my family, and our business, Will greatly miss Michael but we shall never forget his knowledge, his personality and his great love for Alaska.
