Anna Dameron Obituary

Anna Clark “Nan” Dameron of Hillsborough died at Chapel Hill Rehabilitation/Health Care Center on September 11, 2009. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2009 at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Hillsborough, with the Rev. Brooks Graebner and the Rev. Lisa Frost-Phillips officiating. A private interment will take place at a later date at the Dameron family gravesite in Marion. Nan was born in Marion, NC on December 13, 1940. Among many of her life-accomplishments, she distinguished herself as big sister to her siblings (Mary Holderness of Durham, Betsy Poindexter of Jamestown and Penn Dameron of Union Mills) – and as the valedictorian of her Marion High School graduating class. She went on to win honors at St. Mary’s Junior College, and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill. Her professional achievements include serving as Executive Director of the United Way of Stamford, CT and Marketing Director at Deloitte & Touche, also in Stamford. Among her passions were her garden, completing the NY Times Sunday crossword in pen, reading voraciously, and basking on North Carolina seashores. Nan is predeceased by her parents, Emerson Penn (Sandy) and Nancy Dameron of Marion, former husband, Huger King, and infant daughter, Mary Carlson King. Surviving are two daughters, Anna Dollar, husband, Robert, and grandsons, Brandon and Eric, from Concord, and Elizabeth Burns, husband, Derek and grandchildren, Owen and Anna Grace, from Hillsborough. Additionally, Nan will be missed by beloved in-laws, aunts, nieces and nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. The family would like to thank the staff of Chapel Hill Rehabilitation and Health Center for their care of Nan, especially caregivers Renee and Lisa. We also thank Community Hospice for their compassion in Nan's last days. Memorial gifts may be directed to St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 628, Hillsborough, NC 27278. The family is being assisted by the Cremation Society of the Carolinas.

Dear family members,

I was so saddened to read of Nan's recent death. She was such a wonderful person. I had known Nan when we were students at St. Mary's...one year ahead of her and also followed her career and life as alumnae director at St. Mary's for 20 years until I left in 1981. We always had great fun together. I also knew Nan's parents and married a Marion boy so that added another connection. I had not known of her illness as I don't see as many St. Mary's alums as I once did while working there. I am so sorry to hear this news and send all of you my heartfelt thoughts.

Nan was such a great friend and an important part of my life from the time we were 14! We haven't been in touch for the past few years at all, and for that I am very sorry. What wonderful discussions we had over many topics! I'm sure she is in Heaven now having a good chuckle, playing bridge, doing the Sunday x-word and smoking a cigarette!

I send my love to Anna and Elizabeth. The world is a sadder place for loss of a wonderful woman and dear friend.

We will all miss Nan. She was such a lovely lady, smart as could be, so funny she would keep you in stitches laughing, and that beautiful smile. I will be thinking about the family as they learn to go on without her. Martha Biggio Raleigh NC
