David Mickey Obituary

David "Dave" Simmons Mickey
April 12, 1978 - January 10, 2022
Raleigh, North Carolina - David "Dave" Simmons Mickey passed away unexpectedly Monday, January 10, 2022, in Raleigh, North Carolina. David was born in Winston-Salem on April 12, 1978, to Patricia Simmons Mickey and John David Mickey. He grew up in the Wallburg community of Davidson County, attended Wallburg Elementary, Ledford Middle School, the North Carolina Governor's School, and graduated Salutatorian from Westchester Academy in 1996. Dave played on community soccer teams until he switched to refereeing, passing the exam and refereeing games before he was old enough to drive.
Always an avid Tar Heel fan, Dave entered UNC-Chapel Hill in 1996 and graduated with a BS degree in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School in 2000. While at UNC, he was a founding member re-establishing the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity. In 2003 he received his Master of Science in Accountancy (MSA) from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington Cameron School of Business, was inducted into the Beta Alpha Psi honorary fraternity, and was recognized for a 4.0 GPA in the MSA program. Dave became a Certified Public Accountant in 2008.
Living in Raleigh, he worked in corporate accounting and was a true numbers guy. In August 2021 he joined Cato SMS as Director, Technical Accounting, and was employed there at the time of his death.
Dave was a frequent hiker at Umstead State Park, enjoyed hikes around Black Mountain and last year took up golf. He enjoyed travel, hiking in the North Carolina mountains, billiards, football games at Kenan Stadium, exploring history with the Wachovia Historical Society, and visits to friends and family. He also loved watching Carolina basketball and almost never missed a game. He enjoyed many trips with his nieces and was always ready for an adventure; there was not a roller coaster he would not ride. Dave will be remembered as a kind, dedicated friend and family member.
He is survived by his mother Patricia Simmons Mickey of High Point, father John David Mickey and his partner Susan Dayton of Black Mountain, sister Katherine Mickey Morrison and her husband Michael Morrison of Seattle, WA, nieces Mimi and Loowit Morrison of Seattle, aunt Judith M. Simmons of Chapel Hill and uncle James E. Goodwin and his wife Nancy of Elkin.
Interment will be in the University of North Carolina Memorial Grove Garden on the campus in Chapel Hill.
A memorial service for Dave will be held when covid protocols allow everyone to safely attend.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Wachovia Historical Society (wachoviahistoricalsociety.org), The Umstead Coalition (umsteadcoalition.org), or a charity of your choice.

I was absolutely shocked to hear of David's passing. David and I started on the same day at Chimerix and sat next to each other from day one until he was promoted into his own office. We ate lunch together most days at our desk and we would share what was going on in our lives. He was very close to his sister and his nieces whom he adored. He and "the boys" never missed going across the street for "Taco Tuesdays" David was gentle and kind and had an unbeatable work ethic and was simply a joy to be around. He will be sorely missed. Sending my prayers and condolences to you all.

I had met David first during his time at Cree and stayed in touch intermittently thereafter. He was such a kind person and I don´t think I ever saw him mad or frustrated. Life is too short and I hope David and his family ate happy.

David and I worked together at Cree and Chimerix. We are also fellow Seahawk alums. I enjoyed our many conversations about UNC, accounting, the woes of being a homeowner, etc. David was always talking about his visits with his mom and to the island to see his dad. I am sure you are missing him very much. Prayers and condolences to his family.

I worked briefly with David at Cato-Sms. Ever since i started working their he was so sweet always asking when me and Daren were going back to school for our CPA. He loved to talk about Auditing as well as his sister. Enjoyed our lunches and talking about how we were gonna watch the super bowl game this year. Prayers for the family and friends!

I was shocked and saddened to hear about David's passing. We worked together at Chimerix and many a Monday morning we would chat about the UNC and/or Duke basketball games. Lots of debates about who was the better team.

He was always happy when he got to visit or see his nieces and his family. My prayers go out to you all during this time.

I was so saddened to learn of David's death. I remember him quite well as he was in my 5th grade class at Wallburg Elementary School. David was such a kind and loving fellow, and he always wanted to please. My prayers are with you all during this time.
