David Roberson Obituary

David Garland Roberson II, born July 11, 1974 to Gail Taylor and David G. Roberson in Durham, NC, died unexpectedly December 27, 2009 in San Angelo, TX, where he was stationed at Goodfellow AFB. He was a Technical Sergeant with the 316th Training Squadron and the Chief of Training.
David joined the Air Force in May of 1994 after attending NCSU for 2 years. He decided he no longer wanted to be known as “Party Dave” and instead, began his journey of hard work, loyalty and determination. After his basic training, he had the privilege of being assigned to the 31st Transportation Squadron, Aviano Air Base, Italy in November of 2004. He was in Italy for 5 wonderful years and loved every moment there and always wanted to revisit. His next assignment took him to Eielson AFB, Alaska (his actual house address was the North Pole). Here he enjoyed the adventures of outdoor life, experiencing all of what nature had to offer. His last two assignments were in California for four years and Goodfellow AFB since July of 2009.
Dave’s also served in Iraq where he received a safety award for his valor.
Dave’s commitment and career in the Air Force spanned 15 years and was always front and center. But his real passion was bass fishing. He could stay on the water, in a boat, with a jug of water and a fishing rod forever. Through his passion, he created a business and an amazing swim-bait that he designed and handcrafted himself. His motto for his business and his life was “Drop the Fairy Wand and pick up the Big Stick”. In other words, don’t be afraid to go for the real thing!
Dave was a “go to guy” and lived life “out loud”. There was nothing too difficult or impossible for him to tackle. He could find a way to make it happen. His smile, his laugh and incredible sense of humor were a trademark. Life without this wonderful, beautiful human being is almost too hard to accept. But Dave would not want us to be sad. He would want us to celebrate his life and be better people for having known him. We know that if he made a difference in just one person’s life, he would have considered it his most important accomplishment. He was “one in a million”.
Dave was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Melvin and Evelyn Roberson and his stepfather, Ronald Leisure.
Dave is survived by his parents, David and Amy Roberson of Durham, NC and Gail Taylor and Jim Roberts of Wilson, NC; brother, Grant Taylor Roberson, Wilson, NC; sisters, Heather Brown (Jason), Apex, NC, Jayme Daniels (David), Wilson, NC; grandparents, Warren and Joan Taylor, Wilson, NC; uncles, Ret.Col.Alan Roberson and his wife Debra, Alexandria, VA, Byron Taylor, Fred Taylor, Winston-Salem, NC, Glenn Taylor, Topsail Island, NC; nieces and nephews, Taylor Roberson, Zachary Roberson, MacKenzie Roberson, Hayden Roberson, Harper Daniels and James Daniels, Wilson, NC and Wesley Brown and Peyton Brown, Apex, NC.
Last but not least, Dave is survived by his faithful companions that he loving referred to as the “Kids”, Orso, Dea and Lola.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 9, 2009 at Clements Funeral Home, 1105 Broad Street, Durham, NC. Visitation with family will begin at 10:00 am followed by the memorial service at 11:00 am with full Military Honors. A reception will follow at 805 Chalice Street, Durham, NC 27705. Dave and I were stationed at Eielson AFB together and spent many of hours fishing the lakes near base. One of my most enjoyable times during that assignment was when Dave and I took a long weekend and fished the Chena River.

As many people in the military do, Dave and I lost touch and hadn’t spoken in a few years. When two of my new airmen started talking about this crazy instuctor they had for tech school named Sgt Roberson, I quickly knew they were talking about Dave.
We reconnected for a few months via email and I am glad to have been able to talk to him before his passing.

Dave, you will be greatly missed

Dave will be greatly missed. He was a beautiful man who loved the waters and his fishing so much, but his duties as an Officer in the Air Force made him the man that he became. Dave and I shared many stories about our lives, he loved talking about his buddies, his fishing, his "kids" Orso, Dea, and Lola...and his artistic abilities in designing and making his Orso Swimbaits, his artwork on his walls in his home, and his beautiful writings that show and told of who he was. I will always hold Dave close to my heart. He is missed so much.
I am sad for Dave's family, his military buddies, and his fishing buddies. He left this world way to soon for us all...none of us were ready to see this sparkling bright eyes and big smiling man leave, I hope he has his head cam with him on "Heaven's Lake" casting that magic wand.
Love and Miss you Dave,

BAMA Tiff

I first met Dave when he lived up in Oakview, CA when him and his partner Rob were first starting out the swimbait co. Saw him at the lake every trip we were up there he'd toss me baits all the time which was awesome. Got a few chances to fish with Dave and always enjoyed our conversations as they were so full of interesting info. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about him. I spoke to him on the phone two maybe three nights before his passing about a tournament I was pre-fishing for to get some feedback about seasonal conditions. I just don't understand how hes just gone like that!!! I mean, I just spoke to him and everything was fine. Anyway, Dave was a good friend of mine and I am going to really miss him tons! Thank you, Dave for everything you did for me partner. To the family, I am incredibly sorry for your loss but most importantly thank you guys for raising such a good person who touched thousands in many MANY different ways. Thank you wish I could be there!

Your buddy,

I was the First Sgt at Port Hueneme (Mar 07- June 09). When Dave talked people listened. He was a great NCO that was not afraid to speak his mind when things were wrong. He will be sorely missed by the USAF.

Dave and Amy - I know your hearts are broken, I have no words that seem to "justify" this space for your love of Dave Jr.
You are in my prayers each night.
