Edward Winstead Obituary

Edward J. Winstead, 90, of Wilson died Thursday. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park. The Rev. John Drosendahl will officiate. The family will receive friends 6:30-8:00 p.m. Saturday at Joyner's Funeral Horne, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway. Mr. Winstead retired from the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal - CO #90, Hq, 26th Inf, Div dtd 25 April 45 and a second Bronze Star Medal (FOLC) - DA LO dtd 28 Jul 58. He was also awarded the American Defense Service Medal, the American Campaign Medal, and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with four bronze service stars for participation in the Northern France, Ardennes-Alsace, Central Europe and Rhineland campaigns. He was also awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Clasp, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge - GO #9, Hq, 104th Inf Regt dtd 24 Oct 44. He was an owner of Purity Bakery and retired from the U.S. Postal service. Mr. Winstead is survived by his wife, Grace Shealy Winstead; two daughters, Kay Reinmiller and husband, Dick of Lincoln, Neb. and Tyre Cale and husband, Larry of Wilson; a son, Phil Winstead and wife, Sue of Wilson; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Webb of Wilson and Ann Lamm of Roanoke Rapids; three brothers, Carl Winstead and Marvin Winstead both of Wilson and Bill Winstead of Kinston. Flowers are welcome or memorials in his memory may be directed to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 612 Vance St. NE, Wilson, NC 27893. Condolences may be directed to wwwjoyners.net.

I did not know Lt.Col Winstead (ret) but his service record speaks for itself. 2 Bronze stars!! This country has lost a hero, and a great american. My thoughts will be with the family.
