Frederic Dalldorf Obituary

Frederic Gilbert Dalldorf
March 12, 1932 - June 3, 2023
Pittsboro, North Carolina - Frederic Gilbert Dalldorf, 91, finished his time on earth on June 3, 2023. He passed away peacefully at his residence at Galloway Ridge in Pittsboro in the company of his family.
The son of two physicians, Fred grew up in Voorheesville, New York along with his sister, Liz. He attended the Milne School, followed by Bowdoin College and Cornell Medical School. He met and married his first wife, Joanna Stein, in medical school. The couple matched at UNC, moving - according to their friends - past the end of the earth to North Carolina in 1959. Fred spent the rest of his life near Chapel Hill except for a several year stint in the US Army where he was introduced to white t-shirts and black socks, which he wore almost every day thereafter. He became a professor of pathology at UNC and, though he enjoyed research, he relished teaching medical, dental, nursing, and pharmacy students. He was sometimes feared but usually revered by his students and won multiple teaching awards through the years. He raised three children by whom he was also sometimes feared but usually revered. After retirement, he and Jo moved to Talbryn outside Chapel Hill. Jo tragically passed away in 2005 and Fred was a bit rudderless until he had the good fortune to meet his second wife, Jane Bultman. They were married and spent many wonderful years in Chapel Hill and traveling the world before settling at Galloway Ridge, where Jane continues to reside.
Fred was always outspoken, loud, and hysterical. He could be a bit intimidating to children, students, and small adults but had a true heart of gold. Fred was instrumental in the Head Start MED program at UNC and established scholarships at both Bowdoin and UNC for those in financial need. He volunteered to build homes with Habitat for Humanity. At the NC Zoo, he assisted the veterinary staff with autopsies and worked the Smart Carts frequently. He loved Carolina sports, traveling the world, mowing the grass, Oreo cookies, arguing politics, dogs, matching wits with squirrels, sports cars, CBS evening news, cutting down trees, obscure US history facts, a good cocktail, creative use of profanity, and embarrassing stories. What he most loved was Jane, his kids, his grandkids, and, of course, his dogs. He is survived by his wife, Jane Bultman Dalldorf, daughter Carolyn (husband James Barkley), daughter Sharon (husband Richard Fownes), son Peter Dalldorf (wife Christi), 10 grandchildren, and one great granddaughter.
To celebrate Fred's life, there will be a memorial gathering at 5 p.m. on June 13, 2023 in the auditorium at Galloway Ridge at Fearington, 3000 Galloway Ridge Road, Pittsboro, North Carolina. All are welcome to attend and celebrate with us.

Fred and Joanna were super next door neighbors during our time in Chapel Hill. Fred was our favorite "tree guy". Condolences to the family.

I cannot tell you how sorry I was to hear of the loss of Dr. Frederic Dalldorf. I greatly appreciated working with Fred. I worked with him when he was in charge of pathology education in the pathology department. He was a wonderful mentor who cared deeply about medical education and had a positive impact on all of the faculty who taught pathology to medical students as well as on all of the pathology students. He was passionate about pathology education and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this sad time.

It was a great honor to be one of his medical students and I treasure now more then ever my time with him. He made me a better person and better physician. My all time favorite quote from him was, "Fear is a great motivator." He was a wonderful teacher and physician. My thoughts are with his family, thanks for sharing him.
