Jack Chapman Obituary

John Horner "Jack" Chapman

July 16, 1925 - March 16, 2017

Raleigh

John Horner Chapman, aged 91, passed away on Thursday, March 16, 2017 at Rosewood Nursing Home of Cypress of Raleigh, North Carolina. Born in Flint, Michigan, Jack was the son of William Spencer Horner and Evalyn Hester Johnson Horner (Chapman).

Jack served as a Sergeant in the Army during WWII, earning a Bronze Star for his role in the Battle of St-Lo, France. He graduated from Swarthmore College. He spent many years working for Owens-Illinois Glass Company, moving from Toledo, Ohio to Canada and Venezuela. He then changed careers, becoming a financial advisor with Merrill Lynch, and decided to move his business to Raleigh in the early 1990's, where he remained.

Jack was a hard-working and loyal man, who knew adversity and how to rise above it with perseverance and integrity. He always encouraged others to do their best and enjoyed his second career for the opportunity it gave him to help others establish financial security over their futures. When not at the office, Jack took great pleasure in French food and wine, reading, tennis, travel, and opera.

Jack was predeceased by his wife, Ida Rossini Chapman, his first wife, Jane Morfoot Chapman (Bentley), and sons David and Brian Chapman. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Deborah Chapman; his daughter Leslie Chapman; three grandchildren, Jessica Elizabeth Chapman (husband Michael Johnson), Peter Chapman, and Jessica Maria Chapman; and two great-grandsons, Wesley and Marshall Johnson.

A Memorial Service will take place at The Cypress of Raleigh, 8801 Cypress Lakes Dr, Raleigh, NC on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 10:30 AM.
