Jean Arrington Obituary

Jean Arrington
December 24, 1946 - January 5, 2022
Brooklyn, New York - Jean Pierce Arrington died at home in Brooklyn January 5. Jean grew up in Ramer, Alabama, and after graduating from Wellesley College and a year teaching English in Alabama, she served in the Peace Corps teaching in Turkey and then the Ivory Coast.
Between Peace Corps assignments, she married Thomas Bauso, also a Peace Corps Volunteer. After earning her PhD in English (Rutgers) and the birth of Kate, they moved to Raleigh where Louise and Anne were born.
At Peace College, Jean was a professor of English, served as chair of the department, chair of the Promotion and Tenure Committee, and chair of the Humanities Division. She won the Outstanding Teacher Award twice and also the Outstanding Advisor Award. Jean led student trips abroad to Europe and continuously inspired students with her passion for literature and her engaging teaching style.
In 2005, Jean moved to New York City where she continued teaching and, taken with the city's public school architecture, created tours based on the schools and researched and wrote From Factories to Palaces: Architect Charles B.J. Snyder and the New York City Progressive-Era Public Schools (Fordham University Press, May, 2022).
Along with granddaughters Sylvia and Marion, Jean was often with family for cultural events and vacations, including for her 75th birthday, shown in the photo.

A recent conversation about inspiring educators led me to search for Dr. Arrington, and I am saddened to just now learn of her passing. She spent so much time with me, teaching me how to write after giving me a well-earned D on my first college paper. Her guidance changed everything for me and her encouragement sparked a love of writing and a career that has lasted decades. She was a wonderful professor and a kind person with a laugh I´ll never forget. I regret not searching for her sooner and thanking her for her impact. My sincere condolences to all who loved her.

I just learned of Jean´s death. I met her in 2006 in Upper Manhattan - we had both moved to NYC the year before. Jean took me under her wing as a much younger Wellesley alum- she made me dinner, told me about her daughters, we went to events together, and shared stories of our travels. She told me a LOT about public school architecture. I valued her company so much- but lost track of her after getting married. She was fantastic and I think of her so warmly.

Dr. Arrington was an inspiring, enthusiastic professor. I loved her classes, but beyond that I loved talking with her outside of the classroom. She connected with her students in a way that made her unforgettable. I remember her coming to see me and my fellow castmates perform in a very emotional play at Peace College. The next day in class she presented me with a peace lily. Such a kind gesture. Know that she will not be forgotten and her influence runs deep.

I just learned of Jean's passing, at the same moment I learned of the completion of her decade-long project of a book on CBJ Snyder. I'm so glad she found someone to help her complete that work and bring it to publication - it meant an enormous amount to her. And it will be an enormously useful addition to the literature on NYC architecture. Just wish I could have told her so while she was still with us.

I was so excited to hear that my copy of Factories to Palaces was on its way when I read that Jean had passed away. I am very sorry to hear of her loss. Along with family and friends, many members of the public will mourn her passing. As a NYC Guide and author, I will be certain to highlight her contributions in the years ahead.

My sincere condolences to Jean's family. I worked with Jean starting in 2013 and admired the work she did with the Snyder schools. She was wonderful to work with and will be greatly missed. If there will be a memorial that I may attend, please let me know.

My condolence's to Jean's family and friends. I met her in 1996 as a non-traditional student entering Peace College, and she was very helpful to a willing student out of practice at writing. I still have a paper with her comments on it that I came across not too long ago. She was an excellent instructor and mentor.
