Joseph Carroll Obituary

Joseph Bryant Carroll, 61, of Carrboro, died peacefully in his sleep April 2, 2010. Joseph was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, in 1948; grew up in Winthrop, Massachusetts; and attended Boston College High School. He graduated from the University of Chicago and earned a PhD in German literature from UNC Chapel Hill. He worked for many years as a librarian in the Humanities Reference Department of Wilson and Davis libraries at UNC. In 2005 he retired from the UNC Press. Joseph was predeceased by his parents, Joseph B. and Margaret F. Carroll, and by his sister, Lorraine M. Daly, all of Winthrop.
Joseph was a resident of Carrboro for 40 years and he loved living in this area. He had wonderful memories of playing co-rec softball many years in Carrboro and Chapel Hill and he enjoyed nothing more than having coffee and reading at Weaver Street Market. A devoted father and brother and a faithful friend, Joseph will always be remembered for his wit, intelligence, and, most of all, his unfailing love for his family.
A gathering in remembrance of Joseph is planned for later this Spring. Joseph had such a giving heart and compassionate nature, always thinking of others in their time of need. If you would like to honor him, a donation to your favorite charity or to one of Joseph's, the Mines Advisory Group, would have pleased him very much.
Joseph is survived by his son, Hunter Carroll of Carrboro; his sister, Francine Sabean of Bridgton, Maine; and all those whose lives he touched.
