Joseph Haenn Obituary

Joseph F. Haenn

May 17, 1944 - March 22, 2015

Rougemont

Joe passed away peacefully at Duke Hospital on March 22, 2015, surrounded by his family. He was born on May 17, 1944 in Sellersville, PA. He was married to Lynn Van Scoyoc on August 4, 1984 and they had thirty wonderful years together.

Joe earned his Ph.D. in Measurement, Evaluation and Statistical Analysis at the University of Chicago and had a distinguished career in education research and evaluation, including serving as an education policy advisor to Governor Jim Hunt, Director of Research for Durham Public Schools, and retiring from the Department of Public Instruction's Office of School Readiness.

Joe believed in and lived community service. While building his dream home in Rougemont, he led Citizens Against The Collider Here (CATCH) making quite an impression on the Department of Energy with the group's arguments against placement in North Carolina. He also served on the Durham County Planning Commission and the Durham City/County Planning Commission, several years as chair. Joe was a co-chair of the Durham City-County Consolidation Citizen Task Force. Later he was a co-founder of the Little River Community Complex and served on the Bahama Fire and Rescue Board of Directors with a term as president.

Trains, both toy and real, were one of his passions and he had a toy train parts and repair business for many years. He was an active member of the Atlantic Coast S Gaugers (ACSG) and loved his American Flyer.

Joe was a member of Mt. Sylvan UMC and particularly loved the music in the contemporary worship service.

Joe is survived by his wife, Lynn, parents Mr. and Mrs. Joseph W. Haenn, daughter Kimberly Haenn Willett, son Joseph F. Haenn, Jr., sister Judith M. Herb, grandson, Cody J. Willett, and nieces Christine White, Kelly Ryan, Katie Ryan, and Anna Rauch.

The memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 27 at Mt. Sylvan United Methodist Church, 5731 N. Roxboro Road, Durham, NC 27712. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.

Memorial contributions may be made to Save Rougemont Depot, a project near and dear to Joe's heart. Make a check payable to Preservation Durham, P.O. Box 25411, Durham, NC 27701, and specify "Rougemont Depot" in the memo field or go to http://www.preservationdurham.org. Online condolences may be expressed at cremationsocietync.com

Joe you have been a true friend for so many years. We cannot imagine not having you at the train shows with us. We will think of you everytime a whistle blows. Thank you for getting Butch (Harold) back into trains and fixing his first S guage hudson that my dad gave him. You truly inspire the love of trains in all that you did.

Dear Lynn,

Linda and I are very sadden by your lost of Joe. We had a great time with you and Joe in 2006 at the MD/FSU football game. We also where looking forward to spending time with you and Joe at the ACC baseball Tournament, in 2009, but we had to cancel that trip at a last minute situation. I know Joe was a big baseball fan and loved to watch Duke play basketball.
We are thinking of you and I wish I had the right words to say to you.

Sincerely,

Mike and Linda Marmer

Joe you will be sadly missed at our train shows. Your advice, knowledge, help, friendship and expertise were invaluable. You taught me much about trains and life. Your friendship was treasured by me and will leave a void. God bless you, Joe. Prayers for your family as they work through your passing. May the fond memories soon replace the grief they are going through.
