Raleigh, North Carolina - Julene McPhaul (née Barlow), aged 89, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2024, in Raleigh, North Carolina. She was born on June 4, 1935, in the charming town of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, to her loving parents, Wade and Letha Barlow. Throughout her life, Julene demonstrated a profound commitment to her family, a passion for education, and unwavering dedication to her community.
After completing her studies at Meredith College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, Julene embarked on a fulfilling career in education. She served as a music educator and dedicated substitute teacher across various subjects. Julene had a unique gift for connecting with her students, encouraging them to explore their talents and pursue their passions enthusiastically and confidently.
Julene was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, actively participating in various church activities. She served as a Sunday school teacher, imparting valuable lessons with care and compassion. Additionally, she was a deacon, providing support and leadership within the church community. Julene's faith was a cornerstone of her life, and her contributions helped strengthen the bonds within the congregation.
Beyond her church involvement, Julene actively participated in the Woman's Club of Raleigh, a community organization dedicated to social and civic engagement. She held various leadership positions, including president of the Raleigh Woman's Club, where she organized events and initiatives that enriched the lives of those in the community. She also served as president of the North Carolina General Federation of Women's Clubs and the Southeastern Region of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, promoting community service and empowering women to create change.
Julene is survived by her loving husband, Elbert McPhaul, Jr., who supported her throughout their journey together. She leaves behind her daughter, Elizabeth McPhaul-Moore, son-in-law, Lennie Moore, and her cherished grandchildren, Oksana Moore and Liam Charest, who were sources of endless joy. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wade and Letha Barlow, and her beloved daughter, Amanda Charest, whose memory she held close to her heart.
A heartfelt funeral service will be held at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on St. Mary's Street in Raleigh on December 5th at 1:00 PM. This service will be followed by an interment at Raleigh Memorial Park, where family and friends will gather to honor her memory. Julene's extraordinary life-marked by her deep love for her family, enthusiasm for education, and commitment to community service-will be fondly remembered and celebrated by all who knew her. Her legacy of love and dedication will continue to inspire those whose lives she touched.
